TX-Gov: Bill White to Decide on Governor's Race by December 4

by: Phillip Martin

Mon Nov 23, 2009 at 04:42 PM CST

At today's press conference, Houston mayor Bill White said he will decide on whether or not to run for Governor by December 4, though all indications are that he will, in fact, be switching over. He said he wants to talk to more people and hear what everyone has to say.

That includes you. From his press statement: If you want Bill White to run for Governor, let him know:

Since Friday a week ago Texans from all backgrounds and all regions have asked me to consider running to be our next Governor of Texas. Today I agree to consider running for Governor, and shall make a decision by Friday, December 4th.

Before then I invite the citizens of Texas to weigh in on this decision by visiting my website and emailing me at billwhite@billwhitefortexas.com.

Both our next Governor and Senator should bring new energy to the task of moving our state forward. In both positions, we need leadership that can bring our state together and reduce the strident partisanship in both Austin and Washington.

Texans know we can do better than ranking dead last in the nation in the percentage of our population with a high school diploma. Texans know we can do better than the last decade of soaring electricity and insurance costs, and skyrocketing college tuition.

Sen. Hutchison has postponed her departure from the Senate and acknowledged that her continued service limits her ability to campaign in our state. I share her belief, and that of her supporters, that we need a new Governor.

I thank many thousands of Texans who have supported my campaign with their volunteer hours and dollars. I will listen to your views on how we can best work together to do what is right for Texas. I especially welcome advice from the citizens of Texas' largest city, who know me best and have supported leadership by solutions, not just soundbites. You have been my partners in moving Houston forward by finding common ground, and running our City Hall with integrity, in a business-like, financially sound, and inclusive manner.

Politics aside, Texans should enjoy their friends and family during this week of Thanksgiving and say a prayer for those who cannot be home with their loved ones because they are serving us abroad.

Meanwhile, TDP Chairman Boyd Richie released the following statement about the gubernatorial field:

“For several months, Tom Schieffer has traveled across out state and met with Texans about the need for new leadership, and it’s clear he's confident Democrats can win in 2010.  Tom has proudly served our state and our country, and we appreciate his continuing commitment to help Texas Democrats succeed in 2010.

“This afternoon, I met with our Democratic Gubernatorial candidates to assure them that the Party will conduct a fair, open primary and emphasize the importance of having a complete statewide ticket that works together to win next November.

“As we expected, once the Republican ticket settled, even more qualified Democrats are considering statewide races.  We expect a number of capable Democrats to announce for statewide and legislative offices throughout the candidate filing period. Democrats have been gaining momentum in 2006 and 2008, and Texas Democrats are ready to carry that momentum to statewide races next November.

“Texans are an independent people who never back down from a challenge, and we're tired of business as usual from Republican career politicians who always play politics but don't solve problems. Texas Democrats are optimistic that we will field a ticket of mainstream leaders that will restore balance and responsible, problem-solving leadership in Austin after a decade of Republican failure.

sounds like (0.00 / 0)
it's time for a new BOR sidebar poll...

what would you suggest? (0.00 / 0)
I'm open to a new one as it's fairly obvious that our readers love them some Annise Parker in the runoff.

Please read the Community Guidelines and How to Rate Comments.

that's easy (0.00 / 0)
Should John Sharp run for Lt. Governor, Comptroller, or Land Commissioner? All three positions are members of the Texas Legislative Redistricting Board.

Great suggestion! (0.00 / 0)
I like the way you think, ssuits.

What should Mayor White do? (0.00 / 0)
A) Switch to the Governor Race
B) Stay in the Senate Race

Possibly a C) Other

I vote this one (0.00 / 0)
or some variant on "Hey Mayor, hurry up and enter the race for Governor already"

Sanity Returns to the Big D's (0.00 / 0)
Schieffer drops and White reconsiders running for Governor. Please email Bill White today and encourage him to switch to the Governor's race.

I laugh every time I hear a 39% or KBH ad. I hear a cash register ring every time one of them runs on either the TV or radio.

not quite (0.00 / 0)
I jumped to conclusions.  You and I think differently about White's candidacy.  I want Hank for governor and Bill for Senate - whatever year the race takes place.

fair enough (0.00 / 0)
I would like to see Hank run for Agriculture or Land Commissioner. He has earned a spot on the 2010 statewide ticket.

Gilbert was effective in shutting down Schieffer. With KBH refusing to resign until after the primaries, if ever, either White or Sharp needed to give it up and run for Governor. It appears White is making that move.

It'd be interesting to see . . . (0.00 / 0)
Farouk Shami switch to run to Comptroller

It would really be interesting... (0.00 / 0)
...to see Farouk Shami use his millions of dollars to help a few Democratic candidates (instead of Kinky Friedman) and possibly have some credentials before running for any statewide office. Millionaires who think politics is some kind of entitlement program make me want to puke.
