CBO Analysis: Health Care Bill Will Cut Deficit by $81 Billion, Cover 94% of Americans

This brightened up what had certianly been a very dreary day for me. From the Washington Post:

The Congressional Budget Office rendered its verdict (pdf) on the Senate Finance Committee's bill this afternoon. In effect, the agency said the Senate Finance Committee can pass go, and can collect $200. The legislation is projected to cost $829 billion over 10 years, reduce the deficit by $81 billion and cover 94 percent of Americans. It also expects the deficit-reduction to accelerate in the second decade, cutting the total deficit by one-quarter to one-half percent of GDP.

That's about as good as the Finance Committee could've hoped for, and it means the legislation is likely to sail through committee next week. More as I read through the full score.

Hell. Yeah.

Kay Bailey Hutchison and John Cornyn want to vote against a health care bill that will reduce the deficit and cover 94% of Americans?

Please, Senators. I'd love to see you two spin that one.

Interesting... (0.00 / 0)
since previous estimates by the CBO showed increases in the deficit. I read the Director's blog this morning, and I'm reading the analysis to see what changes make the difference (in other words, what did they do in order to make this bill less costly to the federal government).

One thing to note is state governments will have to find an extra $33b for Medicaid and CHIP over the next decade (approximately $3.7b/year). Quite frankly, that's going to be problematic for states, even those with sympathetic legislatures and governors, especially if states continue to see a decline in receipts.

Heard a good comment today that could explain (0.00 / 0)
"Its a rough estimate of a conceptual bill".  AS most know by now Baucus's committee is the only committee that writes a bill in plain english, then has it scored and voted on from that language.  Later the concepts are hammered into actual legislation by the bureaucrats. A little like playing the kiddie game "Telephone". Will be interesting to see what the final combination of all the bills from the 5 committees melts into.

Might be good or it might turn into some Frankenstein monstrosity.

(1) Its a Gummint Takeover!

(2) Its not a moral imperative to provide healthcare--who is God to think he can interfere with the free market?  (ht: Stephen Colbert)

(3) Tax cuts!

Sounds about right. (0.00 / 0)
348 Billion in new taxes and $500 Billion cut in Medicare = $848.  Not going to quibble over the other few billion.
