| Rick Perry's failure today is the latest example of a hubris-driven campaign that believes too much in its own hype for success. Governor Rick Perry's team just failed online as bad as Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison did when she announced. He was supposed to be hosting a "special live online discussion Tuesday, September 29, at 11:30 a.m. CDT (10:30 in El Paso) as we "Talk Texas." The video never rolled, his website crashed, and no one except diehard suppoters got there questions through, and it turned into one big epic failure. For the past week, they've promoted a "Talkin' Texas" event to be hosted live on their website. They even got the Austin American-Statesman to write a big piece on the success of their social media campaign: Perhaps no Texas politician has plunged deeper into the phenomenon of new media than Perry. Not only is the governor himself prolific on Twitter, a service that allows users to post short online messages for anyone who's interested to see, but his campaign and state offices have separate accounts that broadcast Perry news throughout the day.
They plunged, all right -- straight into the toilet. Internet politics and social media isn't easy -- it takes a lot of time and expertise to build a true online campaign. Expertise and intelligence is not something Rick Perry ever has when it comes to governing, and certainly is flailing about online now after today's epic fail. Stick to the crazy stuff, Rick.
