TX-Gov: Retired Air Force General "Ashamed" of Rick Perry for Secession Talk

by: Phillip Martin, Progress Texas

Fri Sep 11, 2009 at 10:07 AM CDT

I'm curious to see how Governor Rick Perry intends to dodge this one: Retired general doesn’t like what he sees in today’s political climate

He flew missions in Vietnam. In the Pentagon, he served proudly under President George H.W. Bush — "whom I loved," he added.

"Now our country chooses a black man as president — and suddenly, the governor is talking about secession? And Arlington is boycotting the president? They won’t even let children see him in school?"

[...]

Daniels reserved special vitriol for Gov. Rick Perry.

"He’s Air Force. He should be ashamed," Daniels said. "I’m ashamed of him." Perry "should know better" than to float talk about Texas leaving the U.S., Daniels said.

"Even for a campaign, it’s the wrong thing to talk about," he said. "That’s not our Texas. We love our country. We’re not going anywhere. We don’t believe in secession."

You absolutely must read Bud Kennedy's full piece in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. It's quite incredible.

I give General Daniels a pass on his comments (0.00 / 0)
and can only assume he was on active duty during the previous 8 years and was unable to get the daily dose of Bush bashing from opponents. By the way, much of it well deserved.

Well then (0.00 / 0)
you would be wrong.

Maybe Bud Kennedy's (0.00 / 0)
interview with Brig. General Daniels sent a clear message:

He is particularly steamed that Arlington schools still refuse to replay Obama's address to schoolchildren yet will bus fifth-graders to hear George W. Bush on Sept. 21 at a Super Bowl event at Cowboys Stadium. "I've always called Arlington a true all-American city," he said. "I love the parks. I love how they stuck their neck out to get baseball and football."

He lives near the Arlington border and shops in the city.

"But now they're one of the few cities in America boycotting the president's speech? That's wrong."

and motivated this reaction from Arlington Public Schools Superintendent, Jerry McCullough:

Arlington schools superintendent apologizes for Obama speech controversy

Arlington schools Superintendent Jerry McCullough issued an apology Friday for the controversy over his handling of this week's televised speech by President Barack Obama.

Arlington and many other districts decided not to show the president's speech live in classrooms.

But just before the speech, news started spreading that 28 Arlington ISD fifth-graders would be bused to Cowboys Stadium on Sept. 21 to attend a Super Bowl XLV event featuring speeches by former President George W. Bush and former first lady Laura Bush.

[...]

In his letter, McCullough took all the blame for the controversy.

"I sincerely regret that this chain of events has occurred and brought negative attention to our district," McCullough wrote. "I apologize that my decisions on behalf of the district have disappointed or hurt people." [all the bolding for emphasis is mine.]

I now look forward to Governor Perry doing the honorable thing as well and by issuing an apology stating that "his decisions have disappointed or hurt people," as well.

Thank you, Brigadier General Tom Daniels. And Bud Kennedy for writing about it.

Gen. Daniels, thank you sir. (0.00 / 0)
City and School District of Arlington: too little too late.

Governor Perry: shame on you. Again. Also.
