Five Texas newspapers could be affected as part of a Chapter 11 re-organization of their parent company Freedom Communications.

Speaking of the newspaper business and advertising, this is scary.

Annise Parker leads poll in Houston Mayor's race, although there is very little awareness of any of the candidates to date.

There is a new blog in Houston called the Daily Hurricane covering "News and Views from the Eye of the Storm". Is it wrong that I find that a terribly offensive name for a Houston blog?

Back here in Austin, where the names of blogs are less stressful, the city itself has been declared as the least stressful by Forbes Magazine among large metros.

Having worked for a paper competing with the Odessa American (0.00 / 0)

back before W was any kind of politician except failed, (Claytie Williams was running for governor, Troy Fraser for the Texas Lege, from Big Spring) .... eh.

Papers owned by chains as "local-oriented" as Morris Communications (Lubbock, Amarillo, with offices in Florida) and Freedom ... well. Folks living in those towns, unless they're rabid fans of the nearest sports team, really are better off with the local tabloid-size want-ads throwaway.

The only thing those want-ads specialty papers miss would be the legal notices, which I believe the law still requires papers to print gratis. Hence that half-page of six-point type once a month in the back of a Sunday edition in dailies, or whatever day the weekly comes out first during the month.

And if the blogger wants to name it "Hurricane," why not? At least you know going in there's spin.
