| More About White and Sharp Despite my recent critique of John Sharp, I still like him and I still believe he can be an asset to his Party and state. My motive was to try to discourage him from his attack on a fellow Democrat. Bill White is the best choice for the U. S. Senate seat for four important reasons: - His extensive experience in both the legislative and executive branches of the federal government leaves him the Democrat best qualified and prepared to serve our state in the U. S. Senate.
- Having served as a precinct chair and state party chair, his Party credentials are superior.
- His leadership and outstanding performance as Mayor of Houston, state Democratic Chair and as Undersecretary in President Clinton’s cabinet are impeccable.
- And most important, his performance on the campaign trail has demonstrated he is the strongest candidate in either party and the person who can win back the U. S. Senate seat formerly held by Lloyd Bentsen and Ralph W. Yarbrough.
Now let’s get back to John Sharp. While Bill White has the best credentials for the federal position, there is no person in either party better qualified for Texas Lt. Governor than John Sharp. Both Bill Hobby and Bob Bullock’s service in this position have proven this is the most important and powerful office in Texas state government. John Sharp has served in the Texas House of Representatives and the Texas Senate. In addition he has held two important elected statewide executive offices, a seat on the Texas Railroad Commission and as state Comptroller. John easily outshines the probable GOP candidate Greg Abbott for this position. He is also superior to incumbent David Dewhurst and could defeat either in a 2010 General Election. A recent Gallop Poll statewide shows more Texans identify with the Democratic Party than Republican. 2010 is ours if we field the right candidates for the right positions. It would be a crime for the Democratic Party to concede this important position to a proven incompetent right wing nut like Greg Abbott. Remember the Lt. Governor also serves on the Redistricting Board. I urge all Texas Democrats to join me to ask John Sharp to file for Lt. Governor in the upcoming Democratic Party Primary Election. This is where he belongs and where his candidacy can best serve his state and party. -- Lloyd Criss, Chair Galveston County Democratic Party |
