Texas Round-Up

Sorry for not writing that much of late. Being away in Pennsylvania for a week and then back home with my folks the week after that, it's more or less been an informal break of writing for me. I'm looking forward to getting back to a regular schedule.

Random

  • New BOR Poll posted on the Texas Democratic Gubernatorial Primary!

  • Now this is just funny.

  • One of the quotes I usually have on my social profiles, like Facebook is "All there is can be explained through infinite randomness and socialized patterns." I think this report sheds some light on that point- the more chaos of data we create, the more we can understand ourselves.

  • From the last issue of ESPN magazine that sports Texas' Colt McCoy on the cover.
“Do you have any gay teammates? Almost half of those surveyed (49.4%, to be exact) said yes, they believe they have at least one gay teammate. In the Pac-10, 70% of those surveyed said yes.”
Austin
  • Capital Metro's MetroRail Red Line now being attacked from the CapMetro board. And from more usual sources but for different reasons.

  • There is a new Austin Neighborhood Association that covers just about the entire city and the ETJ called the "Super Duper Neighborhood Objectors and Appealers Organization" created by the "Great and Powerful Oz" also known as former 1993 Special Election City Council candidate Bill Gammon.

  • An update on the Grayco PUD before the Austin City Council. Predictably, Save Town Lake opposes it. The Austin Contrarian does points out a fault in Save Town Lake's argument that allowing a height variance from 60 feet to 90 feet would be precedent setting.

We can debate whether the Grayco project provides enough community benefit. We can debate whether the  Grayco design passes muster.  But Cooke's argument is a bit of misdirection.  When Council passed the ordinance on June 11, it debated whether to exempt PUDs from the height limits.  Save Town Lake pushed hard to hold PUDs to the height limits.  Council ultimately made PUDs subject to the ordinance, but explicitly provided that "[t]his does not limit a PUD's ability to modify the Waterfront Overlay exemption."  In other words, Council decided then to allow exemptions for PUDs on a "case-by-case basis."  Save Town Lake lost that one.

The debate over the Grayco project should focus on whether it is good enough for an exception.  But stating that  the Grayco project would establish a "dangerous precedent" for case-by-case exceptions is misleading when Council has already resolved to allow case-by-case exceptions.

  • Austinite Jonathan Law start up a new Urban blog called Urbanism South.

Governor Poll (3.00 / 1)
You need a button for "none of the above".

well (0.00 / 0)
there is no "none of the above" on the ballot, other than just not voting at all, which you are free to do as well.

It looks like (0.00 / 0)
Rep. Gary Elkins realized how stupid he was and took the page down.  However, thanks to the magic of the internet it still exists in my RSS reader.  For anyone interested, the post said this:

Congressional Express Card
from Elkins Texas Capitol Report by Rep. Gary Elkins

A constituent gave me this card last night at a town hall meeting.

I hope you enjoy it. (This image was embedded)

I went ahead and screengrabbed it as well.

Funnily enough, the moron's previous post was some set of rules of self improvement.  Looks like the doofus didn't follow the advice he posted:

Silence: Speak not but what may benefit others for yourself; avoid trifling conversation.
Sincerity: Use no hurtful deceit; think innocently and justly, and, if you speak, speak accordingly.
Moderation: Avoid extremes; forbear resenting injuries so much as you think they deserve.
Humility: Imitate Jesus and Socrates.

In case you were wondering where he got that card that he thought was so funny, it was at a John Culberson townhall.

That garbage is what passes for political discourse with Texas Republicans these days.  To contrast, this was a Democrat's townhall.

First, an apology (0.00 / 0)

I'm not seeing where I can email you good folks, and decent manners suggest I shouldn't hijack a topic. That said, and again I apologize for this post seeming off subject and out of place ~

I won't identify the horse's mouth, but the Texas Historical Commission is very quietly slipping in between Galveston and FEMA funds. For some reason (actually, total lack thereof), THC is trying to designate the dead trees on the Broadway esplanade as "historic." There is a time limit on the FEMA money for cleanup and the tree removal has been a very heartbreaking issue. But it has to be done.

I wish that somebody with the resources, voice and reach could figure out what kind of bats are currently flying through the belfries at THC. Actually, that organization has been a national laughing stock for a lot of years, but this is ~ it would be funny if it weren't so sad.

Thank you for listening.

Thank you (3.00 / 1)

Hard to believe I missed that. A little embarrassing, too.

You are welcome. (0.00 / 0)
And you can always just click on a name to see someone's contact info. Often it's right there on their page, if they so choose. Not embarrassing, either. :-)
