Tom Schieffer Announces the Support of Four House Democratic Leaders

by: Matt Glazer

Wed Aug 26, 2009 at 05:04 PM CDT

Nearly 6 months ago, Tom Schieffer announced he was exploring a potential bid for Governor.

Compared to the Rick Perry vs. Kay Bailey Hutchison primed up bloodbath, attackfest, the Democratic ticket has been quiet and to a lesser degree, boring.  Things have been so slow, bloggers and activists have started draft movements for Senators Leticia Van De Putte and Kirk Watson and former Austin District Attorney Ronnie Earle.

In the past 24 hours, there has been movement in the Governor's race on the Democratic side.

Yesterday, potential Agriculture Commissioner candidate Hank Gilbert announced he was interested in the top job instead.  Today, Tom Schieffer show significant signs of life in the same place he started his race 6 months ago. Even Kinky Friedman sent an email out to his campaign list for the first time in months today.

State Representatives Garnet Coleman, Jim Dunnam, Jessica Farrar, and Pete Gallego joined Senfronia Thompson in endorsing Ambassador Schieffer.

"I am gratified by this broad base of Democratic support," Schieffer said. "These leaders have long been in the forefront - often fighting against strong Republican opposition - of efforts to improve education, make quality health care available to more Texans, improve our transportation system and lower insurance rates and utility bills. Together, we can reverse this race to the bottom and improve the quality of life for Texas families."

These endorsements represent an interesting cross section in the Texas House.  Besides representing diverse parts of the state, each is a distinct leader in the state legislature.

Coleman chairs the Legislative Study Group, a nonpartisan caucus dedicated to the development of sound public policy for Texas families.  Dunnam chairs the House Select Committee on Federal Economic Stabilization Funding, which played a key role in allocating federal stimulus dollars during the recent legislative session. Farrar is the current chair of the House Democratic Caucus and the founder and vice chair of the Women's Health Caucus and founder and secretary of the House Environmental Caucus.  Gallego is a former chair of the House Democratic Caucus and former chair of the Mexican-American Legislative Caucus.

When Burnt Orange Report met with Schieffer in July we talked half the time about his Democratic credentials and half the time about policy.  The elected officials endorsed him spent the entire time talking about Schieffer's qualifications and drawing a strong comparison between the Ambassador and his Republican counter parts, but the discussion of Democratic credentials were front and center.

"We are proud to endorse Ambassador Tom Schieffer to serve as the next governor of Texas because he is addressing issues and concerns that are important to Texas families - public education, jobs, children's health insurance, rising college tuition, energy, protecting the environment and transportation," Coleman said. "Tom Schieffer is going to be the next governor of Texas because he cares about solving real problems for Texas families."

Jim Dunnam made his statement after Coleman.

"Democrats across Texas can be proud to support Tom Schieffer - a fellow, lifelong Democrat who has never missed voting in a Democratic primary since he was old enough to vote in 1968," said Dunnam, the House Democratic Leader.

"Tom's service to our country during the previous administration doesn't change that," Dunnam added. "Texans deserve better than one Republican who wants to be governor for life and another who thinks the governor's mansion is a retirement home. That is why Democrats across the state will unite behind Tom Schieffer."

During press questions, Rep. Dunnam added, "we aren't a litmus test party.  For us to have a candidate who is independently minded is positive."

"Tom Schieffer will be the next governor of Texas because he is a proven leader, not an ideologue," Gallego said. "His successful record as a lawyer, businessman and diplomat proves he will bring people together from across the political spectrum and put the needs of Texas and Texans ahead of narrow partisan and ideological interests."

Of course the question was asked whether Schieffer's Democratic credentials were a concern to any of the endorsers.  None of them said it was an issue. Garnet Coleman went as far as to say that he couldn't disagree with any person who voted for a friend and business partner.  Senfronia Thompson added her belief many Democrats have voted for a Republican but Schieffer was one of the few to be honest about it.  Dunnam followed up with the fact he viewed it as a strength.

Will that stop the question?  Only time will tell but now there is a chorus standing behind Schieffer and the backing of the House leaders allowed him to sum up how he will approach this race.

"This is the Democratic Party's first opportunity to win in a long time. The Republican Party has been bankrupt by its leader," Schieffer said. Nobody is entitled to anything. You have to earn it."

Questions may still exist about Schieffer, but with a Democratic primary looming and a campaign being organized, voters and activist may get their answers sooner than later.

i am shocked.

Only mildly shocked (0.00 / 0)
I guess this means nobody else major is going to get in. Or they figure Ronnie Earle's the only one who will and they don't think it's wise to run an Austinite. To me, that's the only shock, and it ain't a terrible big one.

Surprised (0.00 / 0)
I am surprised that such high-ranking members of the House would endorse so early in the process.

It could be a way of trying to clear a path for Schieffer, and/or they just don't like the choices in the race now outside of him, or the potential choices once they arrive in the race.

It would appear Schieffer has been doing a great deal of behind the scenes lobbying.

I wonder what resources that would mean for his campaign, if any at all, from these endorsements.

Seriously, (0.00 / 0)
Is Tom Schieffer the new face of the Texas Democratic Party? Or a bizarre plot to keep us all away from the polls next year. It could work.

What has Schieffer done (0.00 / 0)
 to earn this?

How do you define "Democrat"? (2.67 / 3)
I am disgusted that 4 "House Democratic Leaders" think that the best Democratic candidate is the one who served in the administration led by war criminals.  Not only did Schieffer represent that administration to two countries that participated in the illegal war, he did it for the entire god-awful 8 years!  He never thought, "I don't want to be associated with these crooks" or "I'm not desperate enough for money and power to damage my reputation as part of this cruel and treasonous team".  What's the motivation for these 4 House members to champion a Bushie?  Is voting in Democratic primaries the only qualification they demand for receiving their support?

That is a bit too harsh (3.00 / 2)
First, the Representatives talked about where Schieffer is on the issues -- that is more than just voting in Democratic primaries.

Secondly, legality is not a topic worth discussing much with wars.  If you really think about it, all wars should be illegal.  But it's a harsh world run often by falty human emotions, and war just continues to happen --  obviously, there is no legal system that can stop it.

That President Bush was a bad President is one thing.  That he was a war criminal is quite another and still quite debatable.  (That some people he employed were war criminals is less debatable).  If you had a Republican friend running the country who wanted you to be an ambassador, I dare you to say no.

A lot of public servants from both sides of the aisle and from strong consciences served under the Bush Administration from 2000 to 2008 -- although the vehicle of the Bush Administration, as a whole, probably brought this country backwards; I think it is worth admiring those who tried to push the vehicle the other way.

Perhaps Australia and Japan stayed in the war because the Bush Administration got lucky by finding a good ambassador willing to serve.  We were screwed enough with virtually no international support -- we would be even more screwed with literally no international support.  For that, I think Mr. Schieffer quite possibly had America's interests desperately in mind when he worked for a war he might have thought entirely wrong.

I stand by my assessment.

Not shocked at all (0.00 / 0)
Well Van de Putte won't run, Kirk Watson isn't running. What credible progressive candidate out there is left that can raise money and wage a campaign in an expensive state and have a presence on the top of the ticket that won't hurt suburban or rural Democrats downticket?

The one problem I have with Schieffer is that he was part of the Rangers leadership that traded Harold Baines for Sammy Sosa.

Democrats may despise Bush, but the moderate and conservative independents in this state still like him. Despite the 2008 primacaucus Dems are still anywhere from 5-8 points behind the GOP, although we are making up ground in the suburbs. To his credit, Tom has been meeting the activist Democrats who attend club meetings all over the state and has answered questions about his support of Bush. He just needs to continue to prove he'll be on the right side of the issues.

He's not my first pick but he has the profile that is electable in this still conservative state once you get outside the urban counties and south texas.

If it's about electability and helping candidates downticket (0.00 / 0)
Hank Gilbert is equally electable and can moreso help rural candidates downticket than Scheiffer can.

I am frankly disappointed to see Scheiffer endorsed this early.  I am still leaning toward supporting Hank Gilbert.

Let's hear more about "Hallelujah Hank". (0.00 / 0)
Tom Schieffer may have been up the Republibutts once too often.

Hank Gilbert is the real deal. (3.00 / 1)
Hank is honest, sincere, and very much in touch with the people of Texas.  If we elect him, we will be proud of our national image once again.

Tom Schieffer Won't Run (0.00 / 0)
Maybe. According to Gardner Selby today.

I see that Hank Gilbert is getting donations on ActBlue...not a whole lot, yet. But good for him. Seems like he could teach Rick Perry a thing or two about being a real Texan.

And Wow! What a very nice Web site.

It's Another Wow (0.00 / 0)

The Elephant In The Room (0.00 / 0)
Tom Schieffer looks to be the frontrunner for the Democratic Gubernatorial nomination. With that said, there's an elephant in the room, so to speak, that will surely come to bite him (and by extension, all of us) in the General Election.

Molly Ivins wrote about it extensively. Some of us tried (unsuccessfully) to make George W. Bush answer for it when he was running for Governor. The state's mainstream media, not surprisingly, couldn't be bothered to report it.

That elephant is the use of eminent domain and the creation of the Arlington Sports Facilities Development Authority to obtain the land and the financing for the Rangers Ballpark.

George W. Bush was able to rail against eminent domain as President without anyone in the press so much as batting an eye. Tom Schieffer will not be afforded the same luxury.

Mark my words. It's only a matter of time before WFAA and the other Belo stations start running stories (more than two decades too late) about this. Shortly thereafter, the GOP will start running commercials accusing "liberal Tom Schieffer of stealing our tax dollars to build socialist recreation camps." As an officer and co-owner of the Texas Rangers, Tom Schieffer will be made to pay for the sins that George W. Bush never had to answer for. It fits too many long-standing narratives about "liberals" and "socialism" for the media to do anything else.
