Pete Sessions on Health Care: Don't Tell Me, Tell Obama

by: CoolOnion

Mon Aug 24, 2009 at 11:01 AM CDT

( - promoted by Karl-Thomas Musselman)

Progressives who don't know Pete Sessions have taken his his statement about disruptive town hall meetings out of context, as if he were challenging the screamers to "bring it on."  But those of us in the District know that Pete Sessions is a coward.  Re-read the Politico article and you'll meet a man who pines for a fantasy town hall meeting that never existed, where only "15 or 20 of your friends show up."  But in today's town hall environment he's in his element.  The screamers are his base.  In this video, he answers a woman's health care concern by throwing them some red meat:

Transcript and commentary after the jump...

To his credit, Pete Sessions runs a very well-organized town hall meeting, and invites those who disagree with him to speak.  But that's because he knows the screamers are on his side, and they have us outnumbered.  Tom DeLay made sure of that, when the District lines were drawn in his favor.  Last week's town hall meeting was more like a pep rally than anything else, with "fans" cheering and clapping for him, even when he didn't really answer the question.

This is what we've been putting up with in the District since  2004, a Congressman who just doesn't get it.  Sure, he works for the Boy Scouts and the Down Syndrome Association, and--wouldn't you know it--he's one of those "family values" guys* (*not valid in Las Vegas).

But when faced with the concerns from a real person from the District, which doesn't fit into his ideological mindset, he doesn't know how to respond.

Our local CBS affiliate interviewed the woman after the debate, and wrote a story about her family called Falling Through The Cracks Of Health Care Debate.  Her story is familiar to anyone who's lost a job and health care coverage:

Jacqui Mekias stood in front of 1200 people in Irving Wednesday during a town hall meeting and made a passionate plea.  "I am an American citizen. I deserve the same amount of insurance that anybody else gets. I want my husband to stay alive."

Mekias' husband had a liver transplant 13 years ago and must take daily medication to keep his body from rejecting the new liver. The Dallas mother of two now says her husband is likely to die without health care reform.   "We got sick. Why is that something we should be penalized for?"

So she did what every American has the right to do, tell it to their elected Representative.  But, unfortunately for her, she's got Pete Sessions:
"I was looking for him to say, I don't like the bill that's on the table and this is what I think should be done instead. And this is what me and so and so are writing to counteract this bill."
Below is the transcript from the video that I made especially for the benefit of progressives in other parts of the country who'd like to pull quotes for letters to the editor against Republicans who are taking money from PETE Pac.  As NRCC Chair, Pete Sessions is working hard to recruit Republicans just like himself to take over their districts!  So warn your friends outside Texas that this is what's headed their way:
Constituent: Thank you for giving us an opportunity to discuss this issue.
Sessions: Yes, ma'am.
Constituent: And Congressman, I respect the fact that you have a family member with special needs, and you would do anything you can to make sure that that person in your family is taken care of.  I want to tell you my story about someone in my family who I care deeply about, who's falling through the cracks of our current system and why I think having a public option is so important.  Can I do that?
Sessions:  Yes, ma'am.  Absolutely.  That's why you've been invited down...
Constituent:  Thirteen years ago, my husband was diagnosed with liver failure.  He was told he needed a transplant to live.  Nine months later, he received his transplant.  Now, if my story stopped there and was only about health care it would be a wonderful story about how our country is admired around the world for the type of health care we receive.  However, my story is not about our health care.  My story is about health coverage, pre-existing conditions, and falling through the cracks in the system as it stands.  My husband's a semiconductor engineer, he made six figures a year, we were as middle class as anybody wants to be.  And last Fall, when the economy collapsed, he lost his job.  Now, we had the choice of staying on COBRA, and at the time, as you recall, at that time was $1500.00 a month for our family.
Sessions: Yes, ma'am.
Constituent:  Okay.  His insurance just for him, if I took myself and my two children off, was going to be over $600.00.  The medicine to keep a liver transplant alive, without insurance, was going to cost me $700 a month.  Now, unemployment was only $1500 a month, and we still had rent, and food, and utilities and everything else.  Now, when the new administration came in and the stimulus package came through, we were able to get our-for nine months-insurance reduced.  But at the end of those nine months, we're back up to $1500 and our unemployment is gonna run out.  There are no jobs to be had, especially jobs with insurance.  The only people that are hiring now are hiring contract labor.  Contract labor, they're not required to insure; it's a loophole in the business system.  Now, without the medication, my husband is going to die.  We're already lost our home, we had to sell our car, I've had to cut as many expenses as I can possibly cut, in order to keep my husband alive.  Alive.  It isn't a matter of-y'know, people are saying, "Well, why don't you just go get Medicare."  He doesn't qualify for Medicare.  He's healthy!  He's been post transplant for almost-
Sessions: He's probably not old enough-
Constituent:  - fifteen years -
Sessions: -for Medicare.
Constituent:  He's 54 years old.  He's not old enough.  So we are in this black hole where, y'know, without the public option, all this bill does is say everybody has to be covered.  If there's no cost savings on anybody from the...for the insurer, there's no incentive to make the insurance companies cover us at the same rate that anybody else gets, and all I'm asking for-I'm not asking anybody to take their insurance away from them.  I'm just saying I am an American citizen, I deserve the same amount of insurance that anybody else gets... (applause) ...we pay taxes...
Sessions: Thank you, and I think you've spoken very well.
Constituent:  And I truly would like to know, why aren't you on this?  Please.
Sessions: I'll tell you why I'm not on the bill.  I'm not on the bill because people need to speak to the President when he goes around the country and to say, "Mr. President, let's not do a trillion six hundred billion dollar.  Let's aim where the problem is, and let's help people and let's go...(audio drowned out by applause)...this President...this President was told that in thirteen days, he spent more money than George Bush spent in two wars for seven years, Katrina and New York City with 9-11...(cheers and applause)...and...that a person who is gonna be President has to be responsible for the national debt that is taking place that is killing jobs in this country...(unintelligible exchange between Sessions and Constituent, drowned out by applause)...and this President needs to hear from you and others so that he goes back and does something about the problem, not over everybody in here and ruining Medicare. (Cheers and applause from audience).  And I-I as a member of Congress am trying to say, I have-I have open town hall meetings.  I initiated the meeting with Eddie Bernice Johnson.  I openly will say to anybody, including the President, "Mr. President, listen to people, go do something about the problem, don't try to take over a government run health care plan...(cheers and applause)...I have great empathy.  I really do.  It doesn't take a lot for me to figure out, and I started my career working as a paperboy.  I worked every day, never missed a day of work when I worked in the private sector and I've gotta work for a living now, too.  And I know all but for probably five genes that any of us have that are wrong it could be us that would be there, too.  I, too, understand that.  I'm not a mean, cold-hearted person.  But the American public is also kind and generous, but don't pick on everybody.  (applause) Go and find the problem.  So I would say that a group of people who were here from all the organizations need to go back and do a huddle with the President, and the President is a great salesman.  But he is getting his clock cleaned (wild cheers and applause obscure audio)...dialogue with the President.  And I'm very open to having dialogue with anybody here.  Please aim for the problem. I would love to have you say to the President, "Mr. President, what we're trying to sell is not working."  It's not!  You just can't argue that case.  But you still have needs, and we still have a problem, and Sessions agrees with that.  Let's solve the problem.  Thank you very much.

Very Enlightening (5.00 / 1)
Shameful behavior from an Eagle Scout:

A native Texan, Pete is an energetic, hardworking, and straightforward individual who believes there is a solution to every problem in America. Congressman Sessions focuses on those reforms that will lead to a better life for all Americans. [emphasis added.]

Pete Sesssions' rambling response to Jacqui Mekias was amazingly inept. Shamefully using her has his prop. And yet, they cheer him. I want to say to Jacqui Mekias, thank you for your courage.

As for Pete Sessions:

Pete Sessions is an Eagle Scout and former Scout Master and was recently honored as a recipient of the National Distinguished Eagle Scout Award. He is proud to have been a Scout Master for 13 Eagle Scouts. He is also a member of the United Methodist Church. Pete continues to be active in Dallas where he is an Rotarian and a current Board Member of the East Dallas YMCA. He has served as Chairman of the Northeast Dallas Chamber of Commerce and former District Chairman of the White Rock Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

I've never met Pete Sessions. Based on that video, I hope I never do.

Jacqui Mekias ~ you are my hero. I hope I have the opportunity to meet you someday and tell you so. Thank you.

Thanks for your comment (3.00 / 1)
You know, the thought crossed my mind as I watched him--probably when he was talking about not missing work when he was a paper boy--that he's an Eagle Scout.  But that connection didn't make it into my final reports of the event.  Thanks for bringing that up and finding those highlights from his bio.

You're lucky you haven't met him, but people who know him personally say he's really nice, that he's a productive member of all the organizations he's involved with, and that he's a great dad.  At Sessions Watch, we want to help him pursue all his local projects full time in the near future, and we hope he gets to "spend more time with his family" after the next election cycle.

Shift the focus (5.00 / 2)
Taliban Pete does one thing well - he riles his base with scary tax increases.  Totally shifted the focus from this poor woman's story.  And he threw in his "work ethic" to boot.  Somehow that's what's saved him.  Too bad her husband is unemployed.  You see that's your problem, my poor woman.  If you just hadn't lost a job with good benefits.

I, too, understand that.  I'm not a mean, cold-hearted person.  But the American public is also kind and generous, but don't pick on everybody.

What the hell does this mean?  Don't pick on everybody?  That's exactly what the common good is.  We're all in this together.  Somehow the Rs have turned the "I got mine, you get yours" into their national proof of patriotism.

Don't pick on everybody - what a load of nonsense.

He also claims to be for spreading the risk (0.00 / 0)
He keeps talking about creating insurance pools by allowing associations to buy insurance together (which, earth-to-Pete, we already have).

But nothing would spread the risk better than Medicare for All, and I bet he'd scream "socialism" if we passed that.  What a horrible person (and stupid, too).

Can't help a constituent, but can use healthcare to recruit Republicans across the USA (5.00 / 1)
Pete Session's letter:

Dear Supporter,

As the healthcare debate continues in town hall meetings, on editorial pages, through talk radio and cable news, we're asking you to sign the NRCC's Healthcare Petition.

The NRCC is committed to electing a Members of Congress who oppose government-run healthcare. While Nancy Pelosi and her ultra-liberal allies are barreling through a plan to overhaul healthcare, your Republican Representatives are standing up for you and your family.

Republicans will not support a plan that drives our country deeper into debt and places your healthcare choices in the hands of government bureaucrats. But we need to know that you stand with us in our opposition to government-run healthcare.

Will you follow this link today to sign the NRCC's Healthcare Petition telling Pelosi and her puppets you oppose the Democrats plan to take over your healthcare choices?

Your immediate action is needed to send a message that Americans are not in favor of a government healthcare takeover.

Pelosi and her puppets just can't be trusted. Their trillion dollar stimulus bill has failed to create jobs and left you the and your children with a hefty bill. Government-run healthcare is not the "change" Americans want.

We won't swallow the Democrats' bitter healthcare pill. Follow this link to sign the petition telling Obama, Pelosi and their friends on the far-left that you oppose government-run healthcare.

After signing the petition, I hope you'll not only send this message to a friend, but make a generous contribution of any amount to help the NRCC's efforts to elect conservatives who oppose government-run healthcare. Thank you for your support - keep it up!

Sincerely,

Pete Sessions
NRCC - Chairman

that's Pete...he has his eyes on higher office...why don't we let him take over form Michael Steele and get someone who cares about Dallas residents to do the congressman job!

I guess (5.00 / 1)
this is how Eagle Scouts succeed in 2009...I wonder if there is a merit badge named after Pete.

Hmmm...what about the bailout he voted for? (0.00 / 0)
Oh, right, that was Bush's idea.  I'll swear--if this exact same health care bill was Bush's idea, Sessions, Kay Bailey Hutchison, and John Cornyn would be fighting each other for the prime spot beside him when the cameras rolled on announcement day.

[ Parent ]
And what's especially puzzling about Sessions... (5.00 / 1)
...is that he sponsored the Family Opportunity Act http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/... allowing families with disabled children the ability to buy into Medicaid.

So why is he so strongly against the idea of people in need being able to buy into a public option health care plan, like Medicare, for instance?

It is a puzzlement (5.00 / 1)
Adults disabled by job losses and serious health issues don't seem to matter to old Pete. He would just say "go and throw some papers like I did."
