Another SBOE 5 Candidate

by: Michael Hurta

Fri Aug 21, 2009 at 02:24 PM CDT

David reported earlier this week that Texas State Professor Rebecca Bell-Meterau would be running for the State Board of Education's 5th District.  She's not the only one.

In the comments, as well as in emails we have received, we learned that a guy named Daniel Boone was also running.  Yes, it's no coincidence that he has the same name as that Daniel Boone.  Apparently, he's related.

Daniel also ran for House District 73 in the 2008 cycle, getting about 26 percent of the vote against Republican Doug Miller.  It was not his first run for this seat: he was a write-in candidate in 2006 when he received 2,690 votes (5.64%) when there was not a Democratic Party candidate.  Boone was a career Air Force officer, rising to Lt. Colonel.  Also, with a PhD in Experimental and Clinical Psychology, he has served as an Adjunct Professor at several universities, including the University of Texas at San Antonio.

Although some might consider him an also-ran and find more excitement in Bell-Meterau, it is exciting in general to know that multiple people are taking a jab at this seat, just like SBOE 10.

One more for the mix (0.00 / 0)
James Rath also has an Act Blue page for SBOE5. From his facebook page:

I'm a former lecturer at the University of Texas, and I'm temporarily working in Washington, DC as a AAAS legislative fellow for Rep. Hinojosa on the Education Committee.

I've spent a lifetime learning and working as a teacher. It's important to me to see that Texas kids get a quality 21st century education.

He also has a website, but it's pretty much a placeholder.

Ah, yes, yet another Ph.D. .... (0.00 / 0)
Interesting. I see that he is registered to vote in Circle C and that he received his Ph.D in 2007. His dissertation is entitled "Multiscale Basis Optimization for Darcy Flow." Love that google.

I'd like to ask Travis County Democrats to think strategically and consider the advantages of having a candidate who is not from Travis County running in this 12-county district. Rebecca Bell-Metereau (whom my firm, Stanley-Garrison & Associates, is working for) is a popular professor of English at Texas State, so there are some great opportunities for organizing Democrats at that University that could help improve Hays from a swing to a base county in the 2010 general election.

Then there's the matter of the primary. Even for candidates who are truly dedicated to raising the funds necessary for a vigorous campaign in areas with more than twice the population of a Congressional District (e.g., Dr. Judy Jennings in SBOE 10), SBOE contributions are hard-won. I don't know when James Rath is planning to return to Austin from Washington, but Rebecca Bell-Metereau will be on the phones raising funds today--funds which she'd rather spend in the general election beating Ken Mercer then in a primary with a young man who announced his intentions by email from Washington.

Yep, that makes five of us (0.00 / 0)
including the two that Al represents.

I know Jim from his UT days. He's very dedicated and sincere, and extremely smart. But as a recent student with little political experience and no parental experience, he'll have a very hard time proving that he's better than Rebecca Bell-Metereau or Dan Boone.

Still, those of us who aren't paid to support Rebecca (or Dan) ought to hear him out before writing him off.

I don't know a THING about any of these candidates, but... (2.00 / 1)
You've got Alfred backwards...he doesn't support anybody because he's paid by them. Rather, he accepts them as clients because he supports 'em.

That's not a positive or negative reflection on either his candidate or yours, just a long-standing fact about Alfred. One, actually, I've found to be slightly annoying a time or two, immediately after he's turned down a client I urged him to take. But still, you have to love the principle. I wish more could share it.

I don't have a candidate in SBOE5 (0.00 / 0)
I like all three candidates, and want them all to get a fair hearing. If I win the primary in SBOE10 (where Al is working for my opponent), I'll be happy to run alongside any of them.
