BREAKING: Kirk Watson Running for Re-Election

by: Matt Glazer

Fri Aug 14, 2009 at 00:25 PM CDT

Reports are coming in that Senator Kirk Watson is running for re-election in Senate District 14.

A statement appears to be coming imminently, but sources indicate the Senator has work he would like to continue in the Senate.  Watson was a vocal leader on issues ranging from voter suppression legislation to clean energy and environmental bills during the 81st legislative session.

Watson's name was initially floated as a possible candidate for Governor when fellow Senator Leticia Van De Putte discussed Watson's qualifications.  Not soon after, a few of us started Draft Watson to urge Watson to run.  The campaign was independent of any group, person, and the Senator himself.

We will have more details as the story develops.

Whew. (0.00 / 0)
Glad to hear it. I really like him as my senator, and didn't want to lose him to the huge uncertainty of a statewide race. I'm guessing he saw some polling data that said fuhgeddaboudit.

Maybe 2014.

Disappointing (0.00 / 0)
This is rather disappointing news.  I believe the Kirk would have been a much stronger contender for Government (or Lt. Governor) than our current selection.

Competitive statewide (0.00 / 0)
I agree 100% that we are very fortunate to have Kirk Watson as our senator in Travis County.

I have to respectfully disagree with the defeatist notion that 2010 is a lost cause at the statewide level.

Gallup has shown that Texas can be competitive statewide this cycle; see http://www.burntorangereport.c...

However, two things have to take place for that to happen:

1) We all have to come together and work extremely hard for the nominee, turning out our base in unprecedented ways; and

2) We must elect a candidate who can also appeal to a large cross-section of the Texas electorate in November, particularly independents who have gone the other direction in past cycles.

I believe Tom Schieffer can reach a large number of these independents, much like Mark Warner did in Virginia.

Unity now possible (0.00 / 0)
Democrats now have a chance to unify around Schieffer and vanquish a fractured Republican Party.  It's bad enough that Friedman is running; if Alvarado runs for governor, he will destroy any hope of unity.  I so long for the day that this party exorcises its demons of racial politics, but the problem appears to be getting worse, not better.

Governor Race (0.00 / 0)
Kirk made the right decision.  He is a leader and we need him in the Senate.
Tom can appeal to independents and some republicans.  His message is education and do we need it!  Education can solve a whole lot of problems!  He has the money and the structure and has been working the state.
Felix Alvarado may file, but he does not have the structure or money to mount a campaign and it's getting way too late for that.  I wish he would use his influence to get behind Tom, they are both from Ft. Worth.
Kinky wants to sell books, and will probably write another one.  He only appeals to a certain group who will vote for him, just because - and cause us to be in the same mess we were in 2006.
