Mina Brees Confirmed Dead

by: Karl-Thomas Musselman

Sun Aug 09, 2009 at 04:06 AM CDT

Confirmed by the Austin American-Statesman, Denver Post, and multiple family members, prominent Austin attorney Mina Brees died of undetermined causes yesterday in Colorado while visiting her son Reid.

Brees was a former president of the Austin Bar Association and received the organization's professionalism award for legal ethics and professionalism in 2005. The Democratic nominee in 2006 for a seat on the Austin based 3rd Court of Appeals, Brees received 47.75% of the vote against Republican incumbent David Puryear, the lowest of four candidates running in that election, often blamed on a late campaign fumble when her estranged son Drew Brees, quarterback for the New Orleans Saints, asked tv ads be pulled from the airwaves which had used his likeness. Brees had been subpoenaed by the Texas Attorney General's office last week regarding recent business actions.

She is survived by her family including sons Reid and Drew as well as brother Marty Akins, a former University of Texas quarterback and the 2002 Democratic nominee for Texas Comptroller. Our thoughts are with them in this unexpected and difficult time.

Respect (3.00 / 3)
The Statesman article refers to the controversy. I believe BOR was taking this space to pay their respects to a person who--but for the last three surreal weeks of her life--was a respected attorney and community leader.

I am confident there will be ample time to unpack the Chicksports Inc controversy over the weeks and months to come. For now, I respect BOR and KTM merely paying their respects.

Condolences to her family (3.00 / 2)
Very sad.  May Mina rest in peace.

peace & light to her family and loved ones (3.00 / 1)
It is always hard to lose someone, especially so suddenly.
