Texas Round-Up

by: Ryan Goodland

Thu May 18, 2006 at 05:03 PM CDT

  • Governor Perry ignores a resolution from the Harris County GOP Party asking him to veto HB3 and signs the bill in Brownwood today. The DMN article notes that even though HB3 is now law, Perry plans "to travel around the state holding ceremonial signings of the same bill." Is that not the dumbest thing you've ever heard?

  • Houston City Councilwoman Shelley Sekula-Gibbs, who is running to be the GOP nominee for CD-22, delays a vote on funding for a day-labor site because "the president of the United States says we're not supposed to be employing illegal immigrants." Democratic councilwomen Ada Edwards, Sue Lovell and Carol Alvardo give her what's what in return.

Have a martini (0.00 / 0)
Martinis are a wonderful way to ignore the reality of the world.

Reality of Perry is he's very smart. Not dumb at all.  Everyone will see him signing the bill. Over and over again. And believe, over and over again, that he has saved us all. Particularly our children who will be able to score high on tests. But not be able to read anything other than test instructions.

Reality is Phyllis Schlafly has no sense of reality.  Those who do ignore her.

Shelley Sekula-Gibbs also has no sense of reality.  Those who do ignore her as well as Phyllis Schlafly.  It's Shelley, by the way, not Sheila. But apparently you are already attempting to ignore her. That's a good thing.

Reality is more people should pay attention to what is going on in Mexico. Particularly since half of Mexico is now in the United States.  This election could determine not only the future of Mexico but the future of the United States as well. As in "viva la revolucion." Bang-bang. Unless they have automatic weapons. In which case it will be bang-bang-bang-bang-bang.

Since you're at Rice, what sayeth the Baker Institute on the subject?

They didn't have all these tests when I was in school. Thank god. We at least learned something other than how to score high on tests so our teachers could get a bonus.  Which is still what our education system in Texas is all about. Or should I say it's the only thing our education system in Texas is still about? Thank you, Governor Perry.

Time for martinis.

You're right about "the doctor's" name; I just fixed it.

Why? (0.00 / 0)
I'm actually more pleasant after a martini or two. If I like you. If I don't, well you aren't still around by the second martini.

About Obrador... (0.00 / 0)
I personally think Obrador is the best candidate for Mexico at this time.  He's about as "anti-American" as other Mexicans.  He won't turn Mexico into Venezuela or Cuba.  On Monday, he said that it has been a failure of the Mexican government that is responsible for the flow of immgrants to the U.S. and he has also stated at other times a willingness to work with the U.S., realizing that hurting relations with the U.S. would be the worst thing that could happen to Mexico.

But that's just my opinion.

His base (0.00 / 0)
I would have imagined he would have at least acted like he wanted to appeal to his fiscally conservative base.

Conservative Yet Pragmatic

Phyllis Schlafly is still alive? (0.00 / 0)
Who knew?

Hope is not a plan.
