"You know, they're telling us which cars to buy and which light bulbs to use now. But they ought not be telling us whether we can go to Baptist, Methodist, whichever one. But it is quite different and, I would say, extreme, to say that our laws should not be inspired and informed by the views of the faithful. Freedom of religion is not to be confused with freedom from religion."
-- Texas Governor Rick Perry (Sunday August 2) in remarks at a San Antonio church
Excuse me Rick, but the term "Freedom of Religion" does not appear anywhere in the Constitution or Bill of Rights. The first amendment reads, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof..." People use "Freedom of Religion" as a colloquial term to describe the rights granted under the First Amendment.
Rick, the First amendment gives you the right to practice your religious beliefs without interference from the government. I also have the right to practice my religious beliefs with out interference from the government.
You mock the government, of which you are apart, implying that THEY force us to buy goods we do not want; yet you and your cohorts demand that a Jewish Child attending a Public School should be required to pray to your Savior.
Rick, Freedom of Religion means I have a freedom from YOUR religion. |
