Perry, Hutchison Oppose 196 New Police Officers for Texas

by: Phillip Martin, Progress Texas

Tue Jul 28, 2009 at 11:32 AM CDT

Governor Rick Perry and Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison oppose $36.9 million in federal money that will put 196 cops on Texas streets for three years.

Texas Governor Rick Perry and U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison have repeatedly stated their displeasure with the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Hutchison voted against it last February, and Governor Perry has repeatedly announced his rejection of everything from Washington.

Why do they oppose this? From a press release from the White House today (emphasis added):

Vice President Joe Biden and Attorney General Eric Holder today announced $1 billion in grants to fund the hiring and rehiring of law enforcement officers all across the country under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The grants will be awarded to 1,046 law enforcement agencies from all 50 states, including more than $36,898,579 in grants to fund the hiring and rehiring of 196 law enforcement officers in Texas. These funds will provide 100 percent of the approved salary and benefits for these officers for three years. All police departments receiving the grants will then be required to retain the grant-funded positions for a fourth year.

Good luck spinning that one, Republicans.

A full list of the cities receiving the officers -- including how many officers and how much money each city will receive -- is below:

they oppose it because (0.00 / 0)
Maybe they think it's a bad idea to further federalize our local police departments.

Is there a crime wave in Arlington? (0.00 / 0)
These grants were based on grants with crime rates as a major factor.... what's going on in Arlington?

Studies show (0.00 / 0)
that crime rates escalate in neighborhoods surrounding new sports stadiums. Of course they mowed down all the homes and neighborhoods in the surrounding area so maybe all the new police can enjoy the concerts and the games since there are no neighborhoods anymore.

3 Cops for Addison for $237,830.00 each (0.00 / 0)
and 1 for Roma @ $114,733.00?

Over 3 years (0.00 / 0)
All salaries are over the course of 3 years.

Now, a very great man once said that some people rob you with a fountain pen.

divide it out (0.00 / 0)
depending on the academy that can be up to six months.
3 Cops for Addison for $237,830.00 each
and 1 for Roma @ $114,733.00?

Divide the Addison salary by three and you get 79276.666666667 per officer, and if you divide that by three you get 26425.555555556 per year.

Are they assuming a longer training for the Roma officer? It works out to 38244.333333333 per year.

Different levels of officers (0.00 / 0)
Some officers will just be entry-level; others will begin work as more senior officers.

That was my understanding, anyway.

Now, a very great man once said that some people rob you with a fountain pen.

not for nothin (0.00 / 0)
but if a decimal is repeating like .666666667 you can just put .67.  Flashback to significant figures in high school.
