TX-Gov: Rick Perry 46-36 in Latest Poll Against Kay Bailey Hutchison

by: Phillip Martin, Progress Texas

Thu Jul 16, 2009 at 02:34 PM CDT

Rasmussen reports: Election 2010: Texas Republican Primary: Perry 46%, Hutchison 36%
A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of likely GOP Primary voters in the state finds Perry ahead of Hutchison 46% to 36%. Five percent (5%) prefer some other candidate, and 14% remain undecided.

In early May, the two candidates were separated by just four points, with Perry ahead 42% to 38%. [...]

They also detailed exactly how strong Perry is performing among the key constituencies in the race:

Perry has a 17-point lead among male voters, but the two candidates are virtually tied among women.

Party moderates and liberals prefer Hutchison, while Perry takes the lead among conservatives.

Let's go ahead and update our chart :

TX-Gov Poll Tracking: Rick Perry vs. Kay Bailey Hutchison

(Ed. note: Click on the name/date of the poll to go directly to the poll summary).

I also wanted to highlight these numbers from BurkaBlog, because in addition to the steady lead Perry has built over Hutchison, his favorabilities in this latest poll are huge:

Favorable/Unfavorable
Perry 76% favorable, 23% unfavorable
Hutchison 72% favorable, 25% unfavorable

Job Performance
Perry 74% approve, 25% disapprove
Hutchison (no results given)

Gender support
Men: Perry +17 points
Women: virtual tie

Governor Rick "The Cyborg" Perry continues to show serious strength in the Republican primary.

Tie with women (0.00 / 0)
KBH has to be very worried she doesn't have a lead among women in the primary.  That rules out "get out the fellow-female vote" as a successful victory strategy.

"Let us tenderly and kindly cherish therefore, the means of knowledge. Let us dare to read, think, speak, and write."  -  John Adams

Agreed (0.00 / 0)
If Perry can fight Hutchison to a draw on female voters that's a huge victory for him.  That's all he has to do, coupled with maintaing his standard base, and he wins the primary larger than 5%.

I'm becoming more convinced that Hutchison may not resign at all.  She's isn't needed in Washington, so no urgency for her to stay.  The way she is running her so-called gubernatorial campaign indicates she is about to get her butt kicked, so what better way to ensure you have a consolation prize but to hold on to your senate seat just in case you lose the gubernatorial primary.

That means all the D's and R's running for a seat yet to be vacated might have to turn their sights toward something else.
