Lainey Melnick Files to Run Against Lamar Smith

by: Michael Hurta

Fri Jun 26, 2009 at 02:07 PM CDT

Democrat Lainey Melnick filed her papers earlier this week to be a candidate in 2010's election for U.S. Congressional District 21, a district currently represented by Lamar Smith.  Her kickoff event is planned for Wednesday, the day the Special Session is set to start.  From her press release:
Lainey Melnick will kick off her campaign with her official announcement for the 21st District Congressional seat on July 1st at the Shoreline Grill, 98 San Jacinto Blvd., from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m.  CHAMPS quartets from Anderson and Westlake High Schools will play live and other entertainers are expected.  Advance tickets are available at actblue.com/page/lmkickoff.

"We need a representative in Congress who actually represents us." says Ms Melnick, "We face enormous challenges with the economy, health care, energy, and education to name only a few. We can't afford to play partisan politics.  We need a Congressman willing to vote for the people instead of a political party if we are to return to stability, prosperity, and our position as a global leader."

Lainey, a grassroots leader, small business owner, mother and grandmother, is leaving her position as the Central Texas Regional Lead with Organizing for America to put full-time effort into the race.  Her website, www.LaineyMelnick.com, already includes a long list of public supporters and endorsements.

Although Melnick is a political novice, her list of public supporters already includes some good Austin Democratic names, including Councilman Mike Martinez, and Councilman Chris Riley.  Go view her website and check out her campaign.  She has facebook and twitter accounts, but links to those are hidden in the bottom right-hand corner of the website, which is probably ineffective.  That said, though, she's still off to a decent start for what will definitely be a very uphill battle.

Update by KT: I just noticed this in a Statesman post about Lainey's kick-off next week but there is apparently another Democrat looking at running in the primary. I haven't heard of him until now.

Separately, an Austin businessman who's been weighing a run for the Democratic nomination for the seat said the race might cost a challenger more than $1 million considering the district takes in two major media markets.

Tejas Vakil, 52, described himself as conservative on economic issues but less so on foreign policy and social issues. He said: "The issue is whether or not I can run a credible campaign."

Update by Michael (7:11 pm): When this post was written, Mayor Lee Leffingwell and Councilmembers Mike Martinez and Chris Riley were listed as supporters on Melnick's website.  We got a call by source knowledgeable about the mayor and councilmembers to strike out that part of the post for the time being.  Since then, Mayor Leffingwell's name has been taken off of Melnick's public list of supporters, but the names of Martinez and Riley remain.

Way to go, Lainey! (3.00 / 1)
This is a very tough race, but we can't give Republicans like Lamar Smith a free ride. Districts that were assumed safe for Republicans have changed over time, but nobody recognizes the change until a good candidate runs hard and  tries to flip them. It happened in HD50, HD48, HD47, and HD52. Next up: CD21 (and CD10 and SBOE10 and SBOE5).

confused (0.00 / 0)
Why are the names of Lee, Mike, and Chris crossed out in the post?  I was thinking maybe because their official titles as council members (not councilmen) are non-partisan, but they are well-known active Democrats.  No biggie...just curious.

Confusion warranted; thanks! (0.00 / 0)
It seemed that not all of those politicians meant to show any public support, and there was confusion as to that.  The post has been updated.

Clearing up the confusion... (4.33 / 3)
As happens many times during campaigns, there is confusion between "support" for a candidate and an actual public "endorsement".

Lainey was a solid supporter and volunteer during the mayor's race as well as for Obama during the general here in Austin. She is very committed to the cause and to electing Democrats to office. Lee and his wife Julie are both impressed with Lainey's determination to take on Lamar Smith and of course wish her the best during the campaign.

Mayor Leffingwell and the rest of the Council are facing some serious challenges in our city right now and will be fully focused on their work throughout the budget season. Given the unprecedented crisis our city is facing, our Council would rather focus of solving those problems than making formal political endorsements at this time. However, they have all expressed support for many people who decide to run for office and challenge the status quo. You never know though, as these races heat up, there may be big endorsement announcements in the future.

Sorry again for the confusion. Hope everybody has a great weekend.

Amy

Thanks for the heads up Amy (0.00 / 0)
Perception and reality always seem to have a way of confusing with each other. I hope the endorsements down the line will impact the election more than an early one!

I'm glad Lainey is in the race (3.00 / 1)
It's not going to be an easy race, but I thank her for getting into the race and giving it a good run.  No seat should go unchallenged.

Lainey Melnick is a Spammer (3.00 / 1)
Someone needs to tell Ms. Melnick that sending SPAM -- subscription verification e-mails for a list I never signed up for and have no interest in -- every four hours for four days may be a way to get your name out, but what's now attached to your name is just a lot of ill will.

AMEN!!! (2.00 / 1)
After seeing so so so many of her emails in the last 24 hours, all stating an effort to avoid spam, I wish she'd either figure it out or lose my address.

I am certainly glad... (1.00 / 1)
you made the effort to create this account just to get this comment out.  Considering the state our our nation, all things considered I am sorry you had to exert yourself by hitting the delete key.  As far as things being attached to names, I'd say you just attached the word sniveler to yours.

Look around - I'm not the only one annoyed (0.00 / 0)
1) While I read BOR on a daily basis, I do tend to comment in different arenas, having given up on Texas politics quite some time ago.

2) As the word troll is no doubt often attached to yours.

and why a lot of people may have been annoyed you seemed to feel compelled to create an account and start calling names, odd behavior for a quitter like yourself who has 'given up.'

I've got to ask, if you have 'given up on Texas politics quite some time ago' why would you read BOR daily?

At least you are half right about the names, there have been a lot of different names attached to mine, but never sniveler, quitter or coward.

High Tech Executive? (3.00 / 1)
I don't know Ms. Melnick, but someone who touts herself as a "high tech executive" on her campaign web site should NOT be spamming the crud out of people for her campaign.  I have received probably 20 emails from her that invite me to subscribe to her mailing list and do not provide the required "unsubscribe" option.

ANNOYING.
