Tom Schieffer Endorsed by TAHCJCC

by: Matt Glazer

Wed Jun 10, 2009 at 05:03 PM CDT

As rumors circulate whether Leticia Van De Putte will enter the a statewide race or not, Tom Schieffer announces he has been endorsed by the Texas Association of Hispanic County Judges and County Commissioners (TAHCJCC).

Tom Schieffer was endorsed for governor Wednesday by the Texas Association of Hispanic County Judges and County Commissioners. The endorsement was made after Schieffer addressed a meeting of the group on South Padre Island. It was his first statewide endorsement.

"I am honored that they would endorse my candidacy. I think this will have a huge impact all over Texas because I think it demonstrates my message connects with Hispanic voters and elected officials," Schieffer said. "The message I have is one of bringing people together to solve our state's problems."

According to R.G. Ratcliffe, current U.S. Senate candidate, John Sharp, announced a the same endorsement in February.

This comes on the heels of Kinky Friedman's apology phonebank. Our current Governor's race includes a man who is endorsed by a group who doesn't have a website that can be found online, a candidate apologizing for running as an independent but not his racist remarks, and a third who is not doing anything at all.

Schieffer's press release points out, he is expected to formally launch his campaign later this month.

Whose fault is that? (3.50 / 4)
You are being critical of Tom Schieffer because he is being endorsed by a group who does not have a website.  I hardly think it is his fault that they don't have a website.  Is having a website a qualification for a group endorsing a candidate for governor?  Or is there another reason that you are being critical of Schieffer being endorsed by this group?

No (3.00 / 1)
I am just saying this isn't that big of an endorsement.  Congrats to Schieffer and Sharp for having it.  There is no such thing as a bad endorsement, but would you rather have this one who may or may not be more than a name or would you rather have every precinct chair in Bexar county?

In fact, in searching the web, I found only two articles mentioning this group-- this post, and R.G.'s post (which we linked to).

The move, smartly, is to begin the process of hedging in case Leticia Van De Putte or any other person gets in the race.  Tactically brilliant, but electorally insignificant.

As for not having a website, that's bad for the group, but  no fault was assigned. I think the tone comes more from the fact that none of these candidates are particularly exciting.

I question your objectivity (0.00 / 0)
Dismissing an important constituency is a strange way to build a party.

I wonder if you would have leveled the same criticisms (e.g., electorally insignificant, not that big of an endorsement, no website, etc.) if your preferred non-candidate had received the endorsement.

Come on (0.00 / 0)
How important is this constituency if (a) no one has heard of them before and (b) they haven't arsed themselves to publish even a minimal web site?

This isn't to say that a group of elected Hispanic officials isn't important, any group of elected officials is potentially important.  But, where have they been up to now?

Criticism (0.00 / 0)
Of the candidates running for Governor, Schieffer is my preferred candidate. Therefore, the answer to your question is, yes, I would level such a criticism.

This endorsement appears to be in name only. They have no website.  Nothing has ever been written about them (other than they have endorsed Sharp and Schieffer this cycle). And, while newsworthy, it appears to be electorally insignificant.

This has nothing to do with a constituency.

I point you to the comment I wrote previously:

Congrats to Schieffer and Sharp for having it.  There is no such thing as a bad endorsement, but would you rather have this one who may or may not be more than a name or would you rather have every precinct chair in Bexar county?

Bexar County Democratic Precinct Chairs (3.00 / 1)
My point is that we, as Democrats, should support all activists and organizations who want to build a better Texas -- from the web savvy to the block walkers on down the line.  We're all part of the same movement.

Speaking of Bexar County, here's some coverage from back in May of Ambassador Schieffer meeting with the Democratic Precinct Chairs:

Full disclosure: I am volunteering for the Schieffer campaign, but I speak for myself only here and not for the campaign.  Besides a great candidate, who speaks extremely well himself, we have one heck of a press secretary.
