State Republican Wants to Limit Power of Travis County DA Office

by: Phillip Martin, Progress Texas

Mon Apr 27, 2009 at 03:19 PM CDT

The Travis County District Attorney's office -- in addition to the traditional work all DA offices compelte -- is in charge with investigating the wrongdoings of elected officials in Texas. For the past six years or so, Texas Republicans have given the Travis County DA's office plenty to examine -- most prominently, Tom Delay's cyphering of corporate money into TX State House races.

Now, Republican lawmakers want to limit the scope of power of the Travis County DA's office. From the website Texas Watchdog:

State Rep. Wayne Christian has proposed legislation aimed at weakening the Travis County district attorney’s office, which became the pariah of Republicans everywhere after it indicted GOP stalwart Tom DeLay on charges of money laundering and violating election law.

But this may not simply be partisan payback.

Indeed, the Center Republican has ties to DeLay and his co-defendant and one-time associate John Colyandro. In addition, former District Attorney Ronnie Earle, who hastened the end of DeLay’s political career and indicted Colyandro, also named Christian in an indictment of the Texas Association of Business for violating campaign finance laws. Naturally, some of DeLay’s critics are now wary over Christian’s true motives: Does he want good government? Or does he want to get back at the lawyer who publicly embarrassed his friend?

Rep. Christian does not have a history of good government -- he has a history of partisan hackery.

More on this legislation as it moves through the legislative process...

Interesting to note also that Wayne Christian is the President of the Conservative Coalition (a conservative legislative caucus) and John Colyandro is the Executive Director.

wayne has been named furniture by Texas Monthly and has virtually zero legislative acocmplishments to his name (despite having been in office since 1996...save 1 term).

he is only back in office thanks to a voucher loving repub booster from SA who financed his lies about roy blake, jr (a former Dem, son of a former Dem senator, and common sense repub).

wayne is also a confirmed liar in another area...mailing out a term limits pledge when he first ran in 1996 (only to break it multiple times).

and as someone that campaigns in east texas telling people, "just remember Christian (meaning the religion, not the surname)", this is a great example of hypocrisy. trying to cut the power of the one entity empowered to protect the least powerful folks from abuses of the law by the most powerful.

i won't get into his use of his corporation to finance his AM campaign talk show in the late 90s (which i can hardly believe he never got popped by Earle for).

shame on wayne. he must be gunning for a bump from the Furniture list to the Worst list.

wayne, those with unsoiled hands need not fear. right?

Deuteronomy 24:16: The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, neither shall the children be put to death for the fathers: every man shall be put to death for his own sin. (KJV)

"remember Christian?", well do you?

I love how the bill (0.00 / 0)
radically alters the very foundation of jurisdiction in law.  It seems that some people forget that the reason the Travis County DA can prosecute official misconduct is not because she has special powers, but because the alleged acts took place in Travis County!  The DC Circuit Court of Appeals rules on most cases involving the federal government not because Congress granted it special jurisdiction, but because most of the federal government's actions are taken in DC.

What makes official misconduct different from other crimes to allow such different treatment?  Would we allow murder, rape, arson, fraud, and armed robbery to only be prosecuted in the county of the defendant's residence?  Funny, if it weren't so sad.

"In this world of sin and sorrow there is always something to be thankful for; as for me, I rejoice that I am not a Republican." - H.L. Mencken

Christian Is What You Get (3.00 / 1)
Rep. Christian, unhappily, is a striking example of what we get with one-party government, shameless opportunism unchecked by either law or a sense of civic responsibility.

Christian Corruption (0.00 / 0)
The Motto of the Texas Republican Party.  Get out while you can Senator Hutchison, Speaker Strauss, Rep. Geren and others who have an ounce of morality, compassion and human decency.

The idea that this man can attempt to thwart Justice for his own ends is not only unjust, un-American, un-Christian, immoral, unethical and absurd - it is also un-Texan.  This is nowhere near the ideals which led to sacrifices such as those shown by Sam Houston, Davy Crockett, Barbara Jordan, and the other Texas patriots who led our people forward into this millennium.

It smacks of greed, justice by ambush, the worship of a golden calf, mission by forced enculturation and all the inhuman ugly parts of ourselves we had thought Left Behind.

May he stew in his own mammon.

Logic and an open mind are more useful than common sense.

Wayne worked for AIG until, ahem, recently.

Now associated with Woodbury Financial Group...

yep (0.00 / 0)
this is after his business partnership with former state senator drew nixon (convicted twice of solicitation of prostitution and unlawful carrying of a weapon...including during the 75th session) went south (suntrust, as i recall).

they made lots of money off of old people (annuities) and the terminally ill (buying life insurance policies for nickels on the dollar)...including cancer victims and aids patients.

class act. he clearly has lapses in his memory of "Christian".

Yeah - (3.00 / 1)
Drew Nixon of AIG-Sun America is listed as a contributor to Wayne's ill-fated 2004 GOP primary run for Congress - where he finished a distant 3rd (<15%) in a six-man field.

Wayne also lists a contribution from the lovely Mrs. Nixon, and another AIG-SunAmerica 'advisor', James Edward Hughes, Jr.

Not to mention the nearly $32K he got from Bob Perry last go 'round.
