TX-10: McCaul Says He Won't Run for Attorney General

by: David Mauro

Thu Apr 16, 2009 at 05:55 PM CDT

Despite his poor fundraising, Mike McCaul told the Austin American-Statesman's Gardner Selby that he is no longer considering leaving Congress to run for Texas Attorney General.

In January, McCaul said he would "seriously consider" running for Attorney General if the office became vacant. Though current AG Greg Abbott has not annoucned his intentions, he is widely expected to run for either Lt. Governor or U.S. Senator.

After McCaul's presumed Democratic opponent Jack McDonald posted very impressive fundraising numbres, some (including myself) speculated that McDonald's strong reportmight push McCaul towards running for Attorney General.

While he could always change his mind, that doesn't seem to be the case. As Matt reported today, McCaul only has about $62,000 on hand with over $500,000 in debt. However, the business relationships of his father-in-law, Clear Channel founder Lowry Mays, could make it very easy for McCaul to raise a large amount of money in a short time.

Two candidates, former solicitor general Ted Cruz, a Republican, and former U.S. Senate nominee Barbara Radnofsky, a Democrat, have filed papers to run for Attorney General next year.

Just received a robo call . . . (0.00 / 0)
telling me how McCaul is against Veterans as he did not vote for "the budget". I am assuming that $$ for Veterans was the only thing in "the budget".

Tried to call the group that called, Accountable America, however caller ID noted "private number".  The number on their web site is no good and there is no listing for their name in Washington, D.C.

I'm a little old fashioned and find a great cowardice in calls like this.  I understand they are trying to sway those who act on the last sound bite they heard but I like to at least ask a couple of questions of the caller.  At a minimum if I can talk to them and they believe what they say as gospel I have a hell of a chance of selling them my pacific ocean view estate here in Houston.

Is this a Jack McDonald supported call?  If so anyone have his number?

OTOH, it does give us a chance to finally beat him.

Are things as bad as they're made out to be... (0.00 / 0)
I think not. First, in response to sdhook - we all know that our Congressman voted against the budget because it contains record spending, higher taxes, and results in record debt. If you look at the record it doesn't lie - he has consistently voted to fund our military on and off the battlefield and for increased benefits for our brave Veterans.

Now on to Fundraising - It should be noted that the vast majority of McCaul's debt is to himself as he is able to self-fund to supplement his fundraising.  Despite this he raised almost $1.5 million in the 2008 cycle and dispatched his Democratic opponent with an 11 point win, even though his opponent spent over $1.25 million against him in the very favorable national environment for Democrats.  2010 should be less favorable for any new Democratic challenger in this overall Strongly Republican district.

Interestingly, it should also be noted that Mr. McDonald took mulitple contributions from former colleagues and friends in New York City, where he was an attorney with the prominent law firm of Skadden, Arps until his move to Texas some 7 years ago.  Skadden, Arps represents a "who's who" of large Wall Street firms.  Among these contributorss are executives from AIG, Morgan Stanley and Merrill Lynch, all recipients of Federal bailout funds in one form or another, as well as current attorneys with Skadden, Arps.
