Rick Perry For Texas Secession?

by: Elsbeth

Tue Apr 14, 2009 at 10:16 PM CDT

( - promoted by Karl-Thomas Musselman)

KT: Clearly this is an effort to counter his primary opponent Larry Kilgore who lists the secession of Texas as his top issue. And to think he got a quarter million votes against Perry in the 2006 Gubernatorial primary...

Our fearless leader?

Not good. I like being an American. Transcript below.

I believe the federal government has become oppressive. It's become oppressive in its size, its intrusion in the lives of its citizens, and its interference with the affaris of our state.

Texans need to ask themselves a question. Do they side with those in Washington who are pursuing this unprecendented expansion of power, or do they believe in individual rights and responsibilities laid down in our foundational documents.

Where're you gonna' stand? With an ever-growing Washington bureaucracy, or are you going to stand with the people of this state who understand the importance of state's rights.

Texans need to stand up. They need to be heard, because the state of affairs that we find ourselves in cannot continue indefinitely...

...We think it's time to draw the line in the sand and tell Washington that no longer are we going to accept their oppressive hand in the state of Texas. That's what this press conference, that's what these Texans are standing up for. There is a point in time where you stand up and say enough is enough, and I think Americans, and Texans especially have reached that point.

Poll
Will Rick Perry Call for Texas to Secede from the Union tomorrow during the Tea Party in Austin?
Yes. But only if 50 Republicans show up.
Hell, Yes! He wants to be president of a country.
I hope not. Maybe he'll have a nervous breakdown.
Hard to figure. He might just do it.

Hypocrisy (0.00 / 0)

I feel sorry for TX voters. It appears they're being deceived by their leaders.

Perry's talk is actually kind of cool...challenging the power of the Fed, sticking up for TX, fighting big brother, fighting for our local/state rights...not a bad pep rally speech.

But I see little if any of this in reality with the legislation our state legislature is passing.  So far, from my experience at the Capitol I've seen these same legislators taking away individual's rights more than securing them.

Case in point:

Why did Dan Patrick, Repubilcan Senator out of Houston, introduce SB 1175, which will give police the power to stop you for any reason, demand your papers, and arrest you if they don't comply.  This is what agents of the state can do under totalitarian communism.  This is scary....and this bill made it through the Criminal Justice Senate committee and is getting voted on in the Senate.  Yikes!b>

How is this protecting our individual rights by passing this legislation?

Best,
David

as colin says, there's some unusual behavior unfolding before the eyes of Texas.

Texas As an Independent Country? (3.00 / 1)
Some old-time Republicans are actually getting the drift of the Perry-extremist wing of their party.  It ain't libertarian by a long shot. Their vision: an authoritarian, theistic Texas. Not even the "39%" would go along with most of that, but the inmates are now in control of the asylum.

brigh side (0.00 / 0)
On the bright side, if he does decide to secede, I'll finally have my excuse to move back to California.

so I have that going for me...

Does this mean... (0.00 / 0)
...that pot is legal now in Texas?

Perhaps, but it is all gone (3.00 / 2)
Rick Perry apparently smoked it all himself.

try thinking about what you post before hand (0.00 / 0)
Folks, don't discount peoples concerns with growth of the fed. govt. under Bush and his airport nazis and now Obmama.  New spending like we have now is not good for our long term economic health.  Perry has tapped in to a powerful feeling. don't be so dismisive.

A powerful feeling? (0.00 / 0)
I agree. It's very powerful. Inciting a riot is powerful. And to compare Bush and Obama (correct spelling) is what I see as "dismissive." But it's quite the strategy...confuse the voters into believing that they need to vote against the ones in power (Democrats) in the 2010 congressional elections. There's the power and the essence of what's really taking place. Simple, really.

You're right... (0.00 / 0)
This fed issue cuts both ways.

What Democrat here likes NCLB, the Patriot Act, DOMA, DEA efforts to stop the sell medicinal marijuana, among other things?

Both ways? (3.00 / 1)
I think the last president made sure to ruin the federal government real good. Is that cutting both ways?

We're all correct. (0.00 / 0)
Perry is correct when he calls the federal government oppressive, but that hardly makes it unique.  The Texas state government works hard at being oppressive, as do our local governments.  Ever counted your city's spycams?  If Perry wants to worry about oppressive leadership, he needs only to look in the mirror.

Well then (0.00 / 0)
It's settled. Question: So, a video camera strategically placed (you call it a spycam?) is oppression? I thought they helped with crime prevention. I also thought Republicans were all about that war against crime?

I'm confused. Can you have it both ways?

Perry's a little late... (3.00 / 1)
This was a popular message in Texas about 148 years ago.

Perry's Travels (0.00 / 0)
Governor Rick needs to broaden his experiences through travel, starting with the Appomattox Court House.
It's been a given in Texas politics that whenever a politician raises the "states rights" and "oppressive federal government" alarm, he's conducting the shell game. Democrats did it to obscure the deals they cut with special interests.  I assume that Perry is using it the same way.
