Barbara Radnofsky Likely to Run for Attorney General

by: David Mauro

Wed Apr 08, 2009 at 04:03 PM CDT

Barbara Ann Radnofsky, the Houston lawyer who was the Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate in 2006, has been known to be considering a run for Attorney General for some time.

The Houston Chronicle reported yesterday that Radnofsky has filed paperwork to run for Attorney General next year. Radnofsky is the first Democratic candidate to jump into the race, joining Republican Ted Cruz, a former solicitor general.

But Radnofsky may not be the last Democrat to enter the race, especially if current Attorney General decides to run for the U.S. Senate or Lt. Governor, as many expect. By being the first Democrat out of the gate, Radnofksy will hope to discourage primary competition by posting impressive fundraising numbers.

What other Democrats do you think (or hope) will jump into this race? Let us know in the comments.

Rose? (0.00 / 0)
Unless there's a high-profile and impressive candidate at the top of the ticket, it really doesn't matter. People only care about the Governor's race. Just ask Kirk Watson.
Having said that, this would be a good race for Patrick Rose. He's an attorney, smart and ambitious, and can win over moderate to conservative independents and maybe even some Rs. And he's young enough that if he loses he'll still have a whole career in front of him.

No, Democrats only care about the Governors race (0.00 / 0)
And waiting for a magical millionaire to show up there has cost Texas Democrats and our aligned interests badly.

In fact, we need good downballot statewide candidates and a compelling message (other than obligatory personal affection for George Bush, natch) more than we need a spectacular Gov nominee and a collection of retreads.

I think Radnofsky will be great at whatever she does, and I'd love to see Rose and others give it a shot as well.

At least they haven't been in hiding like some of our new old friends.

I would be interested to State Senator Royce West run for the office.  He can pull a lot of votes from Dallas, experienced in TX politics, and has some name recognition outside of the North Texas region.

Royce would be an interesting candidate (0.00 / 0)
I'm not so sure I'd want to lose his work in the legislature for what would be a pretty risky race though.

Attorney General is really a powerful (0.00 / 0)
position on so many fronts. So powerful that our current AG was scared to show up for the Senate debate on the ID/Suppression bill lest he be required to actually tell the truth about something, or be asked an embarrassing question.

Jim Mattox accomplished a lot as Texas AG for the people of Texas, not for the vested interests.

Just imagine what a good Democrat could do in this position on the issue of voter suppression - a reality which is far more significant than any phantom voter impersonation or whatever the "entrenched" Republicans are scared of on any given day.  What if we had an Attorney General working to secure the rights of all Texans to vote, rather than trying to keep the people from voting.

Perhaps we should ascertain which candidate is more likely to stop all those annoying sales robo calls and all unite behind him or her.  Seriously, the consumer protection aspects of the position are tremendous.  The Child Support Division does incredibly important work, and is in great need of efficiency reorganization.  And would any Democrat have told the sponsors of the anti-gay marriage Amendment that there were no constitutional impediments to it?

Having been affiliated with Barbara in her Senate campaign I will not express an opinion on any other candidate at this juncture - I just say this is a winnable race, and we should devote significant attention to it because of what the position can do.  And add that I will support the nominee of our party with all my ability.

Logic and an open mind are more useful than common sense.

Attorney General is a key race to win (0.00 / 0)
As is Lt. Governor, Comptroller, and Land Commissioner. They all will be members of the Legislative Redistricting Board in 2011.
