Leffingwell Loses First Endorsement

by: Karl-Thomas Musselman

Thu Mar 19, 2009 at 09:06 PM CDT

I have two more local organizational endorsements to report on which include the first one that Lee Leffingwell has lost outright. Of course, the campaign tells me they had expected to lose it, but to a different candidate. That endorsement is from BOMA (Building Owners & Managers Association of Austin) and they figured that Mike Levy or Brewster McCracken would win it.

WRONG. Carole Strayhorn woke up her campaign and snagged herself an endorsement!

Here's what I've confirmed (and will update if you have info).

BOMA: Building Owners & Managers Association

MAYOR:   Carole Strayhorn
Place 1: No Endorsement
Place 2: Mike Martinez
Place 5: ?
Place 6: ?

Austin Tejano Democrats

MAYOR:   Lee Leffingwell
Place 1: Perla Cavazos
Place 2: Mike Martinez
Place 5: Bill Spelman
Place 6: No Endorsement

Again, no upsets, other than the second no endorsement for Councilwoman Sheryl Cole that I'm aware of. Of course, and not to be judgmental, her no endorsements haven't really come from the most active clubs edit: (traditionally- ATJ has since merged with Latinos for Texas which is a positive development for both groups and the community). Still, it does signal some dissatisfaction from locals that maybe she could be more proactive on council (or are upset about her opposition to moving towards single-member districts).

Of course, ChangeAustin.org met last Saturday and Leffingwell was the only candidate to show up I'm told, thwarting the group's original intent to endorse Strayhorn. Reports also indicated that Strayhorn couldn't attend because she was looking for Kevin. Kevin, yoo hoo, where is Kevin?

Update: Upcoming endorsements include the League of Bicycling Voters...

A, yes, that political powerhouse BOMA (3.00 / 1)
I used to be a member when I owned and managed office buildings. I would buy publications such as "Maximizing Boiler Efficiency in the Multi-Tenant Building" and "A Comprehensive Guide to HVAC Filters (Illustrated)." I have back-ordered "Extending the Life of Out-of-Warranty Political Has-Beens," but I don't expect it in anytime soon.

I was really trying to think of what BOMA stood for before I googled it. I propose a comment contest of who can think of a better acronym for it.

"Blacks On Manor Association"?

And who would win them (0.00 / 0)
"Boring Old Madam's of Austin" would sensibly endorse Strayhorn.

McCracken/Cole vs Fair Minority & Geographic Representation on the Austin City Council (3.00 / 1)
The Hispanic political leadership has always supported either single member districts and/or mixed district plans every time the issue has been on the ballot to change our At-Large Election system. McCracken/Cole sabotaged the last Charter Revision Commission on districts chaired by former Mayor Gus Garcia. Their comments in the press concerning districts were flat misleading.

Hispanic representation on the city council over the years has been short changed by the At-Large Election system. So the fact that the Mexican American Democrats of Austin and  Austin Tejano Democrats endorsed Leffingwell and no endorsed Cole is no surprise to me.

The big question is, will the Austin Progressive Coalition no endorse on March 28th in Place 6 or support the status quo. I am banking on the UDems to do the right thing.

BTW St. Davids actually faces 7th Street, though the functional entrance is off the small parking lot that abuts 8th and S. Jacinto. Garage parking is adjacent.

I would hope that the various Austin Democrats would endorse Leffingwell! McCracken is a bright enough guy but he's the developers-real estate candidate.  I assume that the Daily Developer-Statesman-Realtor will endorse McCracken. They will do the "young and creative" thing, misleading voters as they do so often. Remember their endorsements of W?

Place 1 ? = no endorsement (0.00 / 0)

In regard to the ? placed by the Place 1 candidates, here's the letter we got from BOMA:

March 16, 2009

Ms. Perla Cavazos
City Council Candidate, Place 1
P.O. Box 11530
Austin, Texas 78711

Dear Ms. Cavazos:

The Building Owners and Managers Association of Austin would like to say thank you for visiting with our Political Action Committee to discuss issues of concern to the commercial real estate industry.  Likewise, we thank you for your dedication to public service and for making Austin such a great city in which to live and conduct business.

Both candidates involved in this election are highly qualified, have many strengths to offer to the City, and have been dedicated public servants.   We would be proud to have either of you serve on the Council and know that we could effectively work with you and your staff.

In fact, both of you have impressed us so much, that we have decided that we will not be making an endorsement decision in this race.

Thank you again for visiting with us and for everything you do for our great City.

Sincerely,

Kyle M. Gillman
President, BOMA Austin

Mary Guerrero-McDonald
Chair, BOMA Austin PAC, Local Regulatory Issues Committee

not to be judgmental.... because I love you K-T... (0.00 / 0)
But the Austin Tejano Democrats are strong and active.  Almost every local Hispanic elected official is a member and early this year Latinos For Texas voted unanimously to join ATD.

ATD and LFT have worked closely the last two election cycles and we're committed to the next level of possibilities for the Hispanic community.

Watch out.. this is the year of the "Come Up"!  :)

And yes, I'm on TheLeeTeam.

To note that. I should have said traditionally. There is certainly leadership there, but I don't expect elected leaders to often provide the same type of volunteer resources knocking on doors or such. Thanks for helping me clarify.
