More local endorsements have been released.

NXNW Democrats

Mayor:   Lee Leffingwell
Place 1: Perla Cavazos & Chris Riley (dual)
Place 2: Mike Martinez
Place 5: Bill Spelman
Place 6: Sheryl Cole

Mexican American Democrats of Austin

Mayor:   Lee Leffingwell
Place 1: Perla Cavazos
Place 2: Jose Quintero
Place 5: Bill Spelman
Place 6: Sam Osemene

Sierra Club

Mayor:   Lee Leffingwell
Place 1: Chris Riley
Place 2: Mike Martinez
Place 5: Bill Spelman
Place 6: Sheryl Cole

So in short, Leffingwell continues to steamroll the club endorsements (still at 100%), the Place 1 endorsements continue to be split, Bill Spelman continues to have no opponent, and a butterfly ballot is clearly responsible for Mike Martinez losing the endorsement of the Mexican American Democrats.

Thank You, NxNW and Sierra Club! (0.00 / 0)
It was great to meet so many folks tonight at the North by Northwest meeting, and I'm really honored that y'all chose to endorse me! There were some great questions asked tonight, and I'm always enthused when folks in attendance follow me into the hall to continue the conversation.

Thanks also to Sierra Club, our nation's oldest and largest grassroots environmental organization. I am proud to be your choice for Place 1.

Cheers,
Chris

Why did Martinez not get endorsed by the Mexican American Democrats of Austin. I can understand why Sheryl Cole did not get their endorsement in Place 6. Did they articulate why Jose Quintero is the better candidate? I am truly curious.

for the record (0.00 / 0)
I was only able to confirm the endorsements posted and do not know if or how they endorsed in Place 5 and 6. I didn't want to assume anything because a rational person would have assumed Mike in Place 2 but that didn't happen.

I'll post the others if I can get confirmation on them.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Mexican American Democrats Endorse Sam Osemene
For Austin City Council, Place 6

AUSTIN, Texas - March 17, 2009 - The Mexican American Democrats has voted to endorse Sam Osemene for Austin City Council, Place 6.

Osemene was quick to win the M.A.D. endorsement after speaking with them on March 14. He calls for increased transparency in the council along with the need for increased accountability by way of single member districts.

"I am proud to have the endorsement of M.A.D. When I am elected, I pledge to continue to earn their support throughout my term," says Osemene.

Early voting begins on April 27 with the general election on May 9.

1st Crack in the Endorsement Herd Mentality in Place 6 (0.00 / 0)
Next big chance for a no endorsement or Osemene endorsement will be in late March when the University Democrats have their candidate screenings. This group has a strong history on standing on principles over political expediency. It will also be interesting to see what the Central Austin Democrats do in Place 6.

I doubt that UDems will endorse Osemene (0.00 / 0)
Having been in CAD last spring when Osemene was running in Place 4 against Morrison/Galindo/Cravey I very much doubt that he'll win much support there this year. And while UDems may have fewer national ties to Sheryl, it wouldn't take much to kill any chances of him getting their endorsement simply because of his past Libertarian affiliations.

That race is hardly on their radar to be contested. Sheryl will probably win over 75% in each.

and to clarify (0.00 / 0)
Don't take that statement as intended to be a booster of Sheryl. It's just that Osemene is on the low end of credible candidates to offer up as a serious alternative.

Hell, Dewayne Lofton could have probably made a real race out of it- there's certainly underlying dissatisfaction with Councilwoman Cole but it's not so intense that anyone wants to put any political effort or capital into the Osemene bag.

Then No Endorsement in Place 6 by UDems (0.00 / 0)
That would still send a message to a supporter of At-Large City Council Elections, that just happens to be an incumbent council member running for re-election. My post listed "no endorsement" in Place 6 as a viable option. The question with Osemene is not that he will win, but will he beat the point spread you have been predicting in BOR.

My final point is that the UDems can and will vote on principle over political expediency. They are not afraid of an incumbent council member voting against their pet projects or budget line items. They can afford to take a principled stand against At-Large Elections.

In 1974 I was president of the group that later evolved into today's UDems. Over the years, I have always be proud of their maverick spirit when it comes to political endorsements. They are truly the group that preserves the progressiveness of the Austin Progressive Coalition since the early 1970's.

plus, still curious (0.00 / 0)
About why MAD endorsed Jose Quintero over Mike Martinez. Must be a good story there.

Yes and no (0.00 / 0)
I  Think that udems often picks the best candidate in a race regardless of the political winds. But in recent history that don't make endorsements to prove a political point. On that measure they aren't going to go with osemene because he is not the better candidate though I agree the choices are not that amazing compared to other match ups like place 2
