ALGPC & Stonewall Democrats Issue Municipal Endorsements

by: Karl-Thomas Musselman

Tue Mar 10, 2009 at 04:57 PM CDT

Last night the first local club endorsements were issued. I presided over the running of the meeting where the Austin Gay & Lesbian Political Caucus and Stonewall Democrats of Austin issued their municipal endorsements. Here are the results.

ALGPC

Mayor: (Dual) Lee Leffingwell, Brewster McCracken
Place 1: Chris Riley
Place 2: Mike Martinez
Place 5: Bill Spelman
Place 6: Sheryl Cole

Stonewall Democrats of Austin

Mayor: Lee Leffingwell
Place 1: (Dual) Chris Riley, Perla Cavazos
Place 2: Mike Martinez
Place 5: Bill Spelman
Place 6: Sheryl Cole

ALGPC has a 60% requirement for endorsement, so while Leffingwell had a majority, not the super-majority which resulted in a motion to dual endorse. In Stonewall, Chris and Perla flat out tied even as Chris led by a rather wide margin in ALGPC. Go figure.

ALGPC does a mailer to about 750 GLBT voters as a result of its endorsement whereas Stonewall tends to have some marginal help with volunteers. In any case, these are the first club endorsements which give them some weight in candidates ability to leverage early endorsements into winning later ones, like tonight's Endorsement Extravaganza.

Thank You, ALGPC and Stonewall (0.00 / 0)
As I noted earlier today and last night, I am honored to receive both endorsements. I will be an advocate for your issues on our City Council, and want you to know that you can come to me with any concerns. While I've known many members of both groups throughout my two decades of work and service for the people of Austin, I've enjoyed getting to know the new members and look forward to attending more of your meetings once the campaign season is through!
