John Cornyn Still Doing it Wrong!

While I enjoy the image of John Cornyn looking like a complete idiot as well as the next Democrat, I am not sure this scenario would actually be to the party's advantage. What I want to see is Bunning run for reelection, win the Republican nomination, then get stomped by a credible Democratic opponent in the general election, thus putting an excellent Democratic Senator into office for six years.

If Bunning resigns and Governor Beshear appoints a Democratic replacement, I would think it likely that the Republicans could recruit a well-financed and well-known challenger who could knock the appointed Senator out in the next election.

And then we wouldn't necessarily have to win reelection in Kentucky to maintain the 60.

But the number 60 isn't as magical as the media would have us believe. We can always likely get one of the Maine Republican Senators, or Specter, or some other individual Republican to go along with us on relevant votes over the next two years.

2010 is, amazingly, shaping up to be as much as Democratic year in Senate elections as the last two cycles. I would rather have our party have strongly-held seats in the long term than flimsy seats in the short term.

1) Bunning/Cornyn started this mess with Cornyn trying to get a strong primary challenge.

2) Beshear would likely appoint either Lt. Gov (and 2004 Senate nominee) Dan Mongiardo or Attorney General Jack Conway. Auditor Crit Luallen is also a possibility. Mongiardo is already running for Senate this year. We'd be favored almost regardless of who gets appointed of those three.

Not Just Health Care (0.00 / 0)

Health care is important, but not as important as judicial appointments.  Just think of how much leverage it would give the Democrats to keep the Republicans from slow rolling judicial appointments, including possible Supreme Court appointments.  Obama could make a judicial appointment and not have to worry about picking off Collins, Snowe, or Spector.

It's gratifying to see that we can share our no-talent US Senator with the national Republicans. Coryn and Bunning sharing a life boat is a tantalizing image.
