Austin Municipal Round-Up

by: Karl-Thomas Musselman

Thu Feb 26, 2009 at 05:20 PM CST

Enough stuff to catch up on that I'm going to dump it all into this post.

Mayor's Race

  • Carole Strayhorn is apparently too busy to attend 3 forums this week with her opponents. Maybe she'll be too busy to attend City Council meetings as well if she's elected Mayor.

  • Wells Dunbar issues a warning about the proxy campaign.

As McCracken has founded his own campaign on forward-looking technologies such as solar power, his adamant defense of the project was no surprise. And as Martinez is surmised to be Leffingwell's proxy on issues the candidate would rather not wade into at the moment, his fulsome call for caution shouldn't surprise either. Maybe most surprising was Lef fing well's virtual absence from the debate - as politicians take pains to appear cautious, they may not want to remain overly so.

  • The Statesman cares about libraries. Who knew?

  • EMS Paramedics endorsed Lee Leffingwell.

  • Commissioner Sarah Eckhardt writes an unprompted explaining of her endorsement of Leffingwell on her website. Go read it, but also did anyone notice the URL of the post? "a-word-about-jennifer-gale"? I KNEW IT. Jennifer Gale is reaching out to us to endorse Lee Leffingwell from the world beyond.

  • Speaking of endorsements, Leffingwell is apparently rolling out 2 more groups and 6 more elected officials Friday at Noon at his campaign office. Could that be the turning point? Maybe if those officials start working their communities. I don't think we've seen anything like that in a municipal race in many years.

Austin City Council, Place 1

Austin City Council, Place 2

  • Mike Martinez unopposed. Iterated his support for Leffingwell during the University Democrats meeting yesterday which I sense is leaning more towards Lee now. That's important because Leffingwell is pretty much guaranteed to win the Central Austin Democrats endorsement meaning he'd get the Austin Progressive Coalition endorsement and 5000+ doorhangers in central Austin as a result.

Austin City Council, Place 5

  • Bill Spelman unopposed, though there is still a week and a half to file. Not that we want anyone to file since Bill would be excellent on the council.

  • Upcoming events include...

South Austin House Party (Oak Hill)
    Saturday, March 7
    2:00 - 4:00 p.m.
Home of Valerie & Brian Reis
    6516 Rotan Drive, 78749

    North Austin House Party
    Thursday, March 12
    5:30 - 7:30 p.m.
Home of Dawn & Fred Lewis
    4509 Edgemont, 78731

Austin City Council, Place 6

  • Sheryl Cole still only faces Sam Osemene. Really. That's it. This race is even more boring than Place 2 & 5 and Cole actually has an opponent. Then again, the only question is if she wins by 20 points or 40.

McCracken Speaking Soon at UDems (0.00 / 0)
I THINK Brewster will be speaking soon at UDems.  Seeing that Leffingwell gave a relatively dull speech, Brewster could make up a lot of ground by giving an opposite performance.

"Let us tenderly and kindly cherish therefore, the means of knowledge. Let us dare to read, think, speak, and write."  -  John Adams

Best quote of the campaign so far... (0.00 / 0)
From County Commissioner Sarah Eckhardt:

"If you want entertainment, watch American Idol.  If you want leadership in the public interest, vote for Lee."

UDems for Lee (0.00 / 0)

There may be candidates around who make more rousing speeches than Lee, but they cannot match Lee in substance and integrity. He deeply understands the challenges our city faces and will be a solid leader we can trust. Well said, Commissioner Eckhardt!

The night that Lee spoke at UDems, he and his awesome wife Julie joined the membership at Players for a bite. Lee took the time to chat with every single person there and was received incredibly well. It's that kind of one-on-one meaningful contact that moves a candidate forward and matters to voters, especially in local races. Lee has shown time and again that he cares about what we think; Lee listens, and his policies and ideas reflect that. In the spirit of volunteerism and service, Lee has offered up AustinCorps  - which is one of the coolest ideas I've heard in a long time. These are some of the many reasons why the most of the UDems core members are coming together to support Lee.

I've been very excited to see so many of my fellow UDems join The Lee Team. Keep it up!

It still wouldn't Surprise me if Brewster pulls an Upset Endorsement (0.00 / 0)
Brewster was at that meeting, too, and he came to talk with a good handful of UDems after the meeting at Players as well.

I'm not convinced one way or another, but I'm simply baffled by people who seem to think that Lee Leffingwell is obviously far and above the best candidate.  He might be the best, but as someone trying to make a decision in this campaign, I find about as much "substance and integrity" in Brewster McCracken as I do in Lee Leffingwell.

Huh? (0.00 / 0)
If Sarah thinks that American Idol is entertaining, I may have to rethink my earlier support for her!

Sarah is being "Ironic" (0.00 / 0)
I think Sarah is like me, I just as soon poke my eyes out than watch American Idol. Commissioner please correct me if I am wrong.

Share your ideas (3.00 / 1)
PhotobucketBill Spelman is running a grassroots campaign, and he wants your policy feedback.

This past Saturday, we had a community town hall at Will Hampton Library.  Thanks to everyone who took time out of their Saturday morning to share your ideas about the future of Austin.  To see the notes from the meeting, click here.

You can read more about the event in the Oak Hill Gazette:

Spelman holds first Town Hall in Oak Hill

City Council Candidate Bill Spelman held the first of three planned community town hall meetings in Oak Hill on Saturday at the Will Hampton Library. More than 30 people attended the meeting to discuss the topics, "Neighborhoods, Public Participation and Open Government".

Unlike most town hall style meetings in which the candidate gives a speech and then answers questions from the audience, Spelman's campaign designed this meeting to get actual policy input from citizens, the best of which, Spelman hopes to incorporate into his policy proposals.

Osemene (0.00 / 0)
might not win his race, but so far he's the first to return our Combined Environmental mega-questionnaire, so I give him props for that.

Spelman is really working Oak Hill!  I wonder if Oak Hillian Baldridge was able to wring some commitments from him before vacating that race.

Maybe a New Slogan? (0.00 / 0)

Osemene Part 2 (0.00 / 0)
Got an email from him yesterday. I will put it up as a user post this weekend.

Some of us are thinking about making Osemene one of our spring projects to see if we can mess up Karl-Thomas Musselman's projected point spread in Place 6 of 20 to 40 points. Cutting Cole's projected win to less than 20 points is very doable thing to do. Also it might divert some campaign funds from McCracken's coffers if Place 6 heated up.

Keep in mind (0.00 / 0)
that Cole easily defeated Pierce and Lofton in '06 with over 60 percent of the vote. I admire your optimism, but it will not be easy to hold an incumbent council member with every single endorsement under 65%, no matter who it is.

Do keep us updated on your efforts though, it could make the Place 6 race at least a little interesting.
