Hubert Vo Calls for Website to Track to Stimulus Spending

by: David Mauro

Mon Feb 23, 2009 at 11:08 PM CST

In a letter to Gov. Rick Perry, State Rep. Hubert Vo (D-Houston) said a website should be created to track stimulus spending in order to ensure "the strictest level of accountability and transparency."

From Rep. Vo's letter:

... I am respectfully requesting that your office create an official state website to track the money as it comes in and to show exactly where it goes. Texas taxpayers have a right to strict accountability and deserve to have this one stop online resource.

As you know, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act will direct funds to your office and other state agencies for distribution to local programs. A lot of data is expected to be made available in the next few weeks. Texas taxpayers should be able to count on a simple online resource to determine where that money is being spent. Which communities are benefiting? Which federal or state contractors are being hired? Which school districts, hospitals, or other organizations are receiving this assistance -- and how are they putting it to use?

This would be a great way to open up the process and let people see exactly where this money will end up. Whether Rick Perry will decide to do it, well, that's another story.

What about stimuluswatch.org? (0.00 / 0)
I think working with stimuluswatch.org would be a very good start; they have a well-designed (IMHO) site with lots of good features and DATA based on the people who are commenting (voting) on the various projects.

My only question about stimuluswatch.org at this point (a volunteer effort): who's compiling the data and "minding the store"? (keeping track of votes, etc.).

Maybe the data could be shared from this site to whatever Mr. Vo is proposing?

Recovery.gov (0.00 / 0)
The federal site, www.recovery.gov, also seems to intend to track the spending.  However, they will have to rely on the states and local jurisdictions reporting how the money is used.

Also, the money is sliced up into so many different pieces and diffused across various entities that I'm not sure one site can capture all that is going on.  For instance, the transportation money has been allocated to state departments like TxDOT, metropolitan planning organizations like CAMPO, and transit agencies like CapMetro, and each entity will be making its own decisions on how to use the stimulus money.

The TxDOT commissioners are meeting Thursday and may vote then on how to appropriate Texas' transportation stimulus funds.  CAMPO will meet on Monday.
