What's in a Campaign Logo?

by: David Mauro

Tue Feb 03, 2009 at 10:00 AM CST

For Carole Strayhorn, more than you may think.

After using a similar design in campaigns for several statewide offices including Governor, her campaign for Mayor has adopted a logo that drops her famous "One Tough Grandma" slogan and her last name altogether.

2006:

2009:

Her new logo adopts some of the brighter colors that are prevalent in many Austin city races (see Randi Shade, Perla Cavazos, Chris Riley).

Although she sued to try to get "Grandma" included with her name on the ballot in 2006, her mayoral campaign website makes, as far as I can find, not a single mention of "One Tough Grandma."

Dropping the last name(s) may be designed to distance Strayhorn from her past as a Republican statewide elected official. In a Democratic city that gave her less than fifteen percent of the vote when she ran for Governor, she must walk a thin line between touting her experience and avoiding her Republican past. Whether it will work, well, while I wouldn't bet on it, that still remains to be seen.

Update: Almost three weeks ago, the Austin Chronicle did a logo analysis of the Place 1 race. They tell me their Mayoral logo analysis is upcoming.

Riley and The Trinity? (0.00 / 0)
Chris Riley's logo looks eerily similar to the Trinity River Vote logo from Dallas in 2007.

So is Riley for toll roads inside levees?

Obviously, the blue indicates her democratic leanings (0.00 / 0)
I like Carole's logo.  It's simple.  Obviously, the blue indicates her democratic leanings.  The decision to drop "Grandma" from her campaign is wise as it helps remove the generational gaps.  I'm still not certain what Carole's platform is.  This might be a calculated strategy from the campaign.  I do believe she has the zeal and energy to get things done.  City hall seems to talk, and talk, and talk, ad nauseum.
