Dan Patrick for State Schools? Dewhurst is Caving.

by: Michael Hurta

Fri Jan 30, 2009 at 10:26 PM CST

In a list mostly following a trend of past legislatures, the biggest surprise in the Texas Senate's Committee Appointments might be the appointments doled out to Dan Patrick (R - Houston).

First is the oddly high number of appointments the Radio Talk Show Guy managed to garner.  Including the subcommittee on Flooding and Evacuations, I counted six appointments for Mr. Patrick.  And if my math was correct, only one other senator managed that: Senator Craig Estes.  Does the Lieutenant Governor really want to give a senator that much power if he has only been in for about a third of a full term?

Beyond the Flooding and Evacuations subcommittee, Patrick will serve on the committees for Criminal Justice, Education, Health and Human Services, Higher Education, and Intergovernmental Relations.  All of them important committees, for sure.

What's more?  He will Vice-Chair both Public Education and Higher Education.  This is for a man who seems to think that school budgets that increase faster than student enrollment might be a bad thing?  And how would the man who walked out during the Senate's prayer, when it was given by a Muslim, affect quality teachings about the world's religions?  Is Dan Patrick really a strong voice for the teaching of our youth?

Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst seems to be caving into this ultra-conservative hawk.  It started with the 2/3 debate, and it is continuing here.  Dewhurst is a man who has been one of the state's top leaders for years.  He probably has an even higher office on his mind, yet he thinks that the far right will get him elected.  We all knew Mr. Patrick was a bit crazy, but Dewhurst is showing similar colors, too.

Patrick (0.00 / 0)
really wanted to be on the Finance Committee and he did not get that.

True (0.00 / 0)
But that's not to say that Dewhurst isn't caving.  He's just not completely there yet.

Personally, a Lt. Governor should make the appointments on ability and tenure, more than anything else.  And, seriously, does anyone here believe that Patrick has any strong legislative/policy ability?  Maybe dangerous grandstanding ability, but why would Dewhurst be afraid of that?

Dan Patrick is one dangerous son of a *itch (5.00 / 1)
He has a mouth. A radio station. And a nasty streak of nasty in him. He is dangerous.

He took out Van Arnsdale and put in a ultra right winger. Look for this to continue. Especially if he gets access to another radio station.

He has some pretty mindless followers.

To call Patrick crazy is to minimize, in the minds of a lot of people, how much damage he can do.  His destiny is either to self-destruct, or to destroy people's lives on a statewide scale.  It would be a mistake to act on the assumption that the latter possibility has the lesser probability.

Which is, unfortunately, why it is sad to see Mr. Dewhurst giving concessions so easily.  Because that does give weight to your latter possibility.

Patrick is (0.00 / 0)
the poster boy for reinstating the Fairness Doctrine at the FCC.

Without a doubt, but (0.00 / 0)
I do not think the Fairness Doctrine is viable in today's media climate.  It was passed before TV, when radio was the only mass communications available.  Today there are so many forms of mass communication available, such as this blog and thousands of others, that it is hard to argue that the Fairness Doctrine does not violate the First Amendment.  And it is hard to argue that we cannot fight back!
