McCracken, Leffingwell and John McCain

by: David Mauro

Thu Jan 29, 2009 at 00:49 AM CST

I am supporting Lee Leffingwell and will not be posting much on the race, but this was just too good to pass up.

From Wells Dunbar's City Hall Hustle in the Austin Chronicle comes the latest reminder that the campaign could get a little nasty (emphasis mine).

... And just because some of Austin's heavier-hitting political organizations have already weighed in doesn't mean there won't be plenty of time for petty quibbling between the Leffingwell and McCracken camps. The latest round started in earnest with a press release trumpeting McCracken's website relaunch, among other things: "You may have heard that both of Brewster's opponents have chosen to run on the John McCain campaign message: 'a steady hand in troubled times.' Brewster believes we need to expect more of Austin's next mayor than simply trying to hunker down and weather the storm for a few years."

Is it a fair attack or just over the top? Decide in the comments.

A steady hand? (0.00 / 0)
What a minute. Brewster's been on the council for what, two terms? So he can't be running as an outsider. Does this mean that he's promising an unsteady hand? A plague on both their houses.

Yawn. (2.00 / 1)
I find all three rather uninspiring.  It feels like the 2004 presidential primary.

Well there you have it (0.00 / 0)
in the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.

Does Brewster's campaign think we're that stupid? (3.00 / 2)
The real underlying message is I'm young, so I'm like Obama, and he's old, so he's like McCain. It's so stupid it's almost not worth commenting on.

McCain's saying something doesn't make it wrong (3.00 / 1)
You do need a steady hand in troubled times. McCain's experience was a valid selling point, but it was coupled with support for disastrous policies that got us into these troubled times, and the campaign actually showed Obama to have a far steadier hand than McCain.

Is Leffingwell a steady hand that we can trust? That's for each of us to decide, but there's nothing underhanded or secretly Republican about his running on that theme. McCracken's complaint is just plain silly.
