BOR Conversations

by: Karl-Thomas Musselman

Tue Jan 27, 2009 at 01:30 PM CST

Matt and I realized that we have some of the best IM conversations. Maybe we should start printing our stunningly brilliant political insight. Edited slightly for taste... very slightly.

Matt Glazer: I'm not going to lie, the pictures of Chris Riley's event are pretty stunning

Karl-Thomas: yeah, and in other conversations I've had, there is a sense of "where is Cofer, where is Perla" going on

Karl-Thomas: i feel it to

Karl-Thomas: Cofer's done nothing publicly

Matt Glazer: I know

Karl-Thomas: and Riley is eating up energy

Matt Glazer: I completely agree

Karl-Thomas: I think I'm going to post on that publicly

Karl-Thomas: maybe it will goad them into action.

Matt Glazer: but even then, Chris is campaigning like a machine

Matt Glazer: Cofer's asset is his perceived youth and freshness

Matt Glazer: yet Chris is campaigning with that meme

Karl-Thomas: yeah, isn't that funny?

Karl-Thomas: Chris is like, how old?

Matt Glazer: like 50

Karl-Thomas: that's hilarious

Matt Glazer: yet he seems like the most youthful candidate

Karl-Thomas: you know, that is actually an incredibly insightful statement

Matt Glazer: sometimes I think we should just post our IM conversations

Karl-Thomas: we should.

Matt Glazer: it would be pretty funny

Karl-Thomas: it would be awesome

So what say you, less, more?

Riley's apparent age (0.00 / 0)
He seems younger because he rides his bike and walks everywhere - really good stuff for anybody to do more of. When I did that, I seemed younger than my 28 years (right before the arthritis hit). Now that I can't do it, I like to tell people I'm 96 rather than 36. Not far from the truth.

Hey dudes, I'm 44. (0.00 / 0)
But thanks for the compliment, I think.

It's the hair (0.00 / 0)
Clearly it cute both ways. White = distinguished, but like Chris Dodd, it's sooo white that it's totally hip with the young kids. :)

But I can't speak for Matt.

Wait, did I say hair cuts. Oh lord.

Oops (0.00 / 0)
Didn't mean to make you the old man of the bunch, but it goes to show how honest our IM conversations can be.

Chris you really are running one hell of an energetic race so far.

Sorry for adding years to your life, but perhaps you seem experienced?

Are y'all implying that 50 (0.00 / 0)
is old? Hmmph.

Whippersnappers.

Riley's Youthfulness (0.00 / 0)
I'm 20 and Chris has more energy than me. He inspires me to ride my bike more often, and he's going to fix my routes so I actually can!

Chris seems youthful and energetic because he is! (0.00 / 0)
He is super friendly, but will definitely be a tough leader for the city.  I can't wait to see him bring more green jobs to Austin.

more convos and more Chris Reilly (0.00 / 0)
Awesome events like Chris' campaign kickoff at Threadgill's serve notice.

Not only in electoral momentum vis-à-vis that of Rick and Perla.

But, the support that he is getting from major swaths of progressives across demographics throughout the city serves notice that Chris has deep and broad support.

Add that to his genuine progressive bona fides and positions (reviving the economy with green jobs, heavy investment in public transportation, the requisite attention to protecting our environment and the need to do all of this TOGETHER as citizens) and it simply boils down to this:

Chris is uber-cool and has the most serious and the most progressive ideas for Austin.

Not a bad combination.

Get in the game and play! (0.00 / 0)
As a supporter of Perla Cavazos, it is frustrating seeing her on the sidelines.  I have been following everything Chris has done since he announced and find it possible for him to earn my vote.  I feel like he is doing a great job of educating me about his plans and ideas for Austin.  As it stands now, I am with Perla, but if Chris keeps up his hard work I might find myself casting my vote for him come May.

Please no more IM conversations (5.00 / 1)
No offense, but it seems a little self-important and doesn't add much to the analysis. Maybe you could post an analysis of Riley's campaign, pointing out that he seems like the youthful candidate even though he's not the youngest. But statements like "you know, that is actually an incredibly insightful statement" strike me as a little, um, conceited, even if it was meant sarcastically.

Chris Walks His Talk (almost literally) (0.00 / 0)
Chris has the early MO because he offers a clear vision for Austin and he has the track record to prove he can be an effective leader. It also doesn't hurt that he is just a really cool guy that actually lives out his message of reducing automobile dependency, and living a more sustainable life.

Age & Riley (0.00 / 0)
We dropped by Chris's event at 6:30 and saw lots of our contemporaries (I'm 65), so it's not just the bike riders.  I did notice that after we ate in the main restaurant and went back by at 7:30, the place was still jammed but there had been almost a complete turnover and the average age had dropped by about 20 years.

Geez (0.00 / 0)
Whatever became of subtlety?

Bike riding and a nice party at Scholz's do not a campaign make. I think the other candidates are working hard as well. Nobody is sitting on the sidelines, and in any case it's only January kids.
Pace yourselves.

Scholz? (0.00 / 0)
Or do you mean Threadgills. I know the two are more or less interchangeable for city election kick offs, lol.
