Kaine: The 50 State Strategy Will Continue

by: David Mauro

Fri Jan 23, 2009 at 03:20 PM CST

On Wednesday, I eulogized the apparent death of the successful 50 State Strategy and lamented the overall under appreciation of outgoing DNC Chairman Howard Dean.

In new DNC Chairman Tim Kaine's acceptance speech, he praised Dean and the 50 State Strategy.

From MyDD:

There's no question it'll be hard to match Howard Dean's record as chairman of this party. His 50-state strategy was simple and powerful. The Obama campaign adopted it and the results speak for themselves.

The basic point-and the principle I'll carry with me as DNC Chair-is that everybody matters...

...You don't have to be a big donor for your donation to matter.

...You don't have to be an expert for your idea to matter.

...You don't have to be a full-time campaign worker for your effort to matter.

I will be true to that strategy-every state, every community, every person matters.

Together, we'll do some new things-because we can never rest on what worked yesterday. But we will never again as a party write off states or regions or people.

...

The 50 state strategy is now and forever what Democrats do.

If Kaine keeps his word, it appears that reports of the demise of the Fifty State Strategy were greatly exaggerated. Good news for Texas.

Great news for Texas indeed (0.00 / 0)
Otherwise we would continue to be mired in a Republican driven Dark Ages and Reign of Terror and Torture.

Howard Dean (0.00 / 0)
was as wonderful, accessible Chairman.

I remember when the previous Chairman came to Dallas and told us the Platform did not matter.

Now there are important items from our Platform on the White House web page.

Why don't you just say it? (5.00 / 1)
You were wrong.  Period.  You spoke way too soon.  The rumors were greatly exaggerated by YOU!

I'll say it (0.00 / 0)
I was wrong.

But Kaine and the DNC team have backpedaled from what they originally said (read my previous post). They did not come out and fully embrace the 50 State Strategy until there was an outcry from the Blogosphere.

I was extremely worried that the 50 State Strategy would not continue. Glad to see Kaine and Co. are behind it.

Thank you! Very big of you. (0.00 / 0)
Perhaps they have backpedaled, but the biggest problem with the blogosphere is that is spreads rumors and exaggerates problems all out of proportion.  It turns matches into wildfires.  We can all learn something from this experience and hopefully, try to avoid doing it in the future.

Along with the DNC strategy, Obama is also rolling out a new initiative called OFA 2.0 that will help continue the momentum we started during the campaign.  They solicited feedback from supporters across the country on how to best move forward, and now they're launching this exciting project.

It's great that they've named Mitch Stewart to spearhead this project.  Not only was he the mastermind behind the surprise Iowa caucus victory and the Virginia general election victory for Obama, but in between those efforts, he came to Texas to run our field program for the Texas caucuses.  None of the pundits gave us a chance in Texas because the Clintons had a decades-old relationship with our state.  But Mitch's field team got down to business and organized our volunteers, and we ended up winning the majority of delegates out of Texas.  I point this out only to demonstrate that OFA 2.0 is in good hands, and we're lucky that Mitch spent some time in Texas and saw our potential for growth.  If we continue to work hard, we have a chance to shock the world and make Texas a battleground state in 2012.

The Obama campaign empowered a whole new generation of activists to step up, and it's great to see that Mitch is still fighting the good fight.  Watch the video.  Sign up and get organized.  Let's turn Texas blue!
