Lee Leffingwell Adds Symbolic Campaign Funds in Mayor Race

by: Matt Glazer

Early today KT wrote about council member Lee Leffingwell's decision to run for Mayor of Austin.

The Austin American Statesman is reporting Lee Leffingwell has made a symbolic contribution to the campaign coffers of $41,163.

Today Leffingwell loaned his campaign $41,163 - a symbolic $1 larger than the amount Carole Keeton Strayhorn has raised in the past few months of her mayoral campaign.

Leffingwell didn't announce a mayoral bid sooner than this month to avoid triggering a costly special election to fill his Place 1 seat.

While he has not been running for Mayor, a group of community leaders have been securing support for Leffingwell's likely run. To date the "Draft Lee for Mayor" campaign has put together a list of over 300 supporters (my name is included, KT's is not) and raised approximately $1,500.

This officially opens up a race for Perla Cavazos, Rick Cofer, and Chris Riley in place 1.

For more information on fundraising including cash on hand numbers, money raised, and money spent for all filed candidates check out KT's analysis here.

Symbolic of what? (0.00 / 0)
I'm honestly not trying to be snide, but can someone please explain what a massive loan to his own campaign is symbolic of?

It's ironic that some of his opponents are attempting to paint Brewster McCracken as a rich elitist, but to date he's the only person in this race without a personal fortune large enough to fund his own campaign.

I can't help but think that if Brewster had done something like this it wouldn't have escaped harsh criticism.

It's exactly $1 than what Carole raised.  $1 more is simply symbolic of Carole's weakness.

It is sort of striking that Lee Leffingwell wasn't even officially running and neither Carole or Brewster could solidify a coalition around them. Lee files and 1 day later he has more money in the bank and a list of over 300 people listed as supporters.

That seems symbolic.
