Democrats Release 64 Pledged "No to Craddick" Votes

by: Matt Glazer

Mon Dec 29, 2008 at 09:02 AM CST

The House Democratic Caucus released a list of 64 Democratic names who have signed a simple pledge.

I will not vote for Tom Craddick for speaker of the 81st Legislature under any circumstances.

While the House Democratic Caucus had this to say in their press release:

As Texans first, House Democrats have worked and continue to work to bring change to the Texas House of Representatives. Moving Texas forward for all Texans with policies that improve the lives of our constituents has been our overriding goal. Allowing each House Member to represent their constituents to the best of their ability, and allow ideas, bills and policy to be dictated by the merits is the best way to achieve that goal. We are eager to work with like-minded Republicans in a bipartisan manner.

Rather than listing all the people that signed the pledge, it is easier to list the familiar few who did not:

  • Harold Dutton, Jr.
  • Al Edwards
  • Ismael (Kino) Flores
  • Helen Giddings
  • Dawnna Dukes
  • Ryan Guillen
  • Ruth Jones McClendon
  • Tracy King
  • Aaron Pena
  • Sylvester Turner

This is a familiar list for anyone who pays attention to the legislature.  All of these Democrats supported Craddick in the 80th Legislature and most received plush committee assignments in return.

However, not signing the pledge is not the same as a vote.  I remain optimistic that some of these elected Democrats will vote for leadership in the Texas House.  All of them represent Democratic areas with DPI's ranging from 55% in Tracy King's district to as high 76% in Dawnna Dukes' district.

These are Democratic strongholds and their values must be represented-- something Tom Craddick clearly does not do.

There are no grudges from 2007.  We are all looking at 2009 as a clean slate.  BOR looks forward to seeing more names added to this list before the session begins.

Quick Math Update:  The following 12 Republicans have publicly stated they will not support Tom Craddick-- Reps. Dan Gattis, Rob Eissler, Joe Straus, Charlie Geren, Edmund Kuempel, Brian McCall, Jim Keffer ,Burt Solomons, Byron Cook, Delwin Jones, Tommy Merritt and Jim Pitts.

There are now 64 explicitly named Democrats and 12 explicitly named Republicans.  That is a grand total of 76 actual names against Craddick.  Yet Craddick still refuses to release a list of his supporters.  Interesting.

The Judas Ten should get a "last call" this week to sign the pledge (2.00 / 2)
Any last minute joiners should not suffer consequences for their past disloyalty.

Those Judas Democrats who can't perform simple math equations and who are so committed to the prospect of putting their own ambitions over party unity that they will go down with the SS Craddick should get bumped to the back of the line with respect to every privilege the party has control over.

Kino is a blatant crook, and several other holdouts are dumber than rocks, so I'm sure a few will go down with Craddick, but I have to believe that there are a few prodigal Democrats smart enough to recognize the benefit of catching the last lifeboat.

Am I the only one? (3.00 / 1)
Am I the only person who thinks it strange that a candidate for an office (i.e., Sylvester Turner for Speaker) would not sign a pledge against his opponent (i.e., Tom Craddick)?

Anyone who has closely followed Turner's career would not find (0.00 / 0)
this incongruity so strange from Turner.

It would be a very strange situation indeed for any other Representative, but for Turner it's just par for the course.

too bad (2.00 / 2)
it is very disappointing to see hold outs FOR craddick.

hopefully as the writing on the wall becomes even clearer, they will come back.

i believe that craddick is lying to them about his number of supporters.  when they find out the truth i think they will not be too happy.

keep in mind that craddick has made clear that he thinks little of the health of the body, it's members or his legacy.

whereas Laney cut everyone loose right after the 02 elections to give them all a chance to make their own deal, craddick isn't concerned with what happens to these members after he falls.

i know many of these people to be fine public servants and good Democrats.  surely their better judgement will prevail and they will be a part of us moving forward.

I want to make it very clear, the 80th session is over.  The March primaries are over.  The November elections are over.

I look at 2009 as a clean slate and I know many people share that sentiment.

The writing seems to be on the wall.  Craddick is very likely gone.  I hope all 74 Democrats and 75 Republicans (minus 1 Tom Craddick) will join together and elect bipartisan leadership.

Every person that stands up against Craddick will be applauded for standing up for Texas.

I hope to see more name on this list in the coming weeks and I look forward to writing about every member who stands up against Craddick.

The fact that Dr. Tara Rios Ybarra and a few other presumed (3.00 / 1)
fence sitters have joined the 64 Democrat anti-pay-for-play majority is something we should celebrate.

Of those holdouts who come around, bygones should be bygones, but for the remaining "Democrats" who do not come to see the light this week and join the 64 Democrats who are working together to strengthen both democracy and the Democrats in Texas, we should begin planning for the primaries in advance of the 2010 election.

If you are offering your services as the person who will vouch for their status as "fine public servants and good Democrats," that speaks volumes about them.

my intel out of South Texas and the RGV for the last few months was that Tara was for real.  i'm glad that i gave her the benefit of the doubt.

certainly these folks have a chance to re-write history. just as their positive contributions were immediately forgotten when they voted for craddick...their last vote for craddick will be forgotten when they help us turn the page and start anew in the House.

it is also important to understand that some of these folks may have deep ties to craddick that lead them to act in an irrational manner...despite the obvious change coming.

i'm confident we'll have more unity rather than less in the coming weeks.

some of these folks have really leveraged themselves on craddick's side and i'm sure they want to be damn certain before bailing.
