Thinking of shopping at Wal-Mart this Holiday Season?

by: Wake Up Walmart

Mon Nov 24, 2008 at 04:50 PM CST

If you are, I'm sure the Chinese will be psyched.

Wake Up Walmart, who I'm working with, has a great new video up highlighting the perils of supporting the Bentonville behemoth.

In their quest to cut costs, Walmort outsources more and more jobs overseas. It's come to the point where 70% of Walmart products are now made in communist China. "In the race to the bottom, Walmart gets ahead and the middle class falls behind," the ad warns.

I know I'm just kind of preaching to the choir about how ugly Walmart's business practices. But in the spirit of the holiday season, I'd like to invite you to do one of three things:

1. Send this ad to your friends and family. Walmart's low prices are deceiving and in this struggling economy, a lot of good people might be fooled. It's important that we get the word out about the high cost of these low prices.

2. Visit WakeUpWalmart.com today and learn how you can help. With the election over, if you have time to join the good fight, we could always use your support.

3. Blog about how the Obama administration should have a say in curbing Walmart's ugly business practices. This isn't only a case of a corporation out of control; it's a case of worker abuse, shoddy environmental practices and an active union-busting agenda.

We're fighting for more than just winning elections. We are fighting for a more progressive America.

In this time of economic peril, it's more important now than ever. I urge you all to join the fight and send a strong message to Walmart!

Haven't shopped (0.00 / 0)
at Wal-Mart in years. Wake Up Wal-Mart does a great job.

New data out there? (0.00 / 0)
I just checked your site and almost all the points you are making are 3-5 years old. Do you ever go back and recheck the points to see if Wal-Mart has taken corrective action? I know they have made great strides in moving their stores to sustainable energy. They seem to have taken a better stance in their practices in the past 3 years through different leadership. It would be good to have new data to help your cause. Most people like myself would look at your data as old and stale.

I hope your not just chasing an old issue. If anything, Wal-Mart seems to be meeting the needs of families during these times of the economic downturn. There is a bigger picture here.

Ah, the real story (0.00 / 0)
Now I see.  Wake Up Wal-Mart is a front for the UFCW's efforts to unionize Wal-Mart and far from a citizen's group. It all makes sense now.  The data is still very dated and probably should be updated regarding the studies and reports.

I'm not trying to defend Wal-Mart by any stretch. There are things they can do to improve their worker's position. Heck, every company can always do better. I just like current information on the corporation when evaluating a case.

So, you don't (5.00 / 1)
like unions? And "citizens" aren't union organizers?

Oh, and there is current information on the Wake Up Wal*Mart Web site if you would take the time to open the PDF files. I don't have time right now to spoon feed.

Why did you ignore the Wall Street Journal story?

I looked at the comment and felt it necessary to clarify the no. The no was meant to be no response to you.

I have neither a bias for or against organized labor. My father, uncles and cousins were or are in organized labor. I grew up in a union hall in Arkansas. It had a place at that time and has appropriate places in our workforce today. However, it is not a categorical response for all workers. Thousands of businesses operate without organized labor successfully today. The issue is more complex than a yes or no.

I have to be suspicious of a group that sponsors a website like Wake Up Wal-Mart when it is clearly known that group is trying to unionize Wal-Mart. The motives are too obvious. What I find even more disturbing is the absence of any Wake Up Target website when it is clearly documented Target's practices are not stellar.

I find no reason to continue comment on this issue as this has once again elevated to polarized debate with you.
