Jim Hightower on Prop 2: "...covering up their stink with a Karl Rovian campaign of deceit..."

by: Deb

Sat Nov 01, 2008 at 06:16 PM CDT

Dear friends,

Why in the world should we support super-rich, out-of-state developers and retailers with our city tax dollars?

Why should they get a $60 million government subsidy to compete against our own homegrown businesses?

Why should a shopping center that caters to rich people get tax money that is needed for the public good?

You don't have to be in Who's Who to know What's What, do you? This giveaway stinks, which is why they're having to dump hundreds of thousands of dollars into a political ad blitz. They're trying to cover up their stink with a Karl Rovian campaign of deceit, hoping to kill our common sense, democratic, true-Austin-initiative, Proposition 2.

Prop 2 is a grassroots message to the Powers That Be. It says "NO" to doling out corporate welfare that does nothing but further corporatize Austin. That's why Prop 2 is supported not only by Austin's local businesses, but also by labor, environmental groups, neighborhood councils, and every political party - Democrats, Republicans, Libertarians, and Greens.

We can't match the PR blitz of the corporate interests, but we can use our grassroots networks to spread support for Austin's Proposition 2. They've got the Fat Cats - but we've got the Alley Cats, and there are many more of us!

Please blast your email lists, make calls, leaflet polling places, and otherwise stand up for Austin by standing up for Prop 2.For more info on how to help, Call Brian Rogers at 366-5000.

Thanks for all that you do to make this such a unique and great city. Keep Pushing!

Sincerely,

Jim Hightower

An Open Letter to Mayor Wynn (0.00 / 0)
Mr Mayor, your campaign slogan "Keep Austin's Word" is an oxymoron, "a combination of contradictory words."  The People of Austin Never gave their word to give a high end Shopping Mall $64 million!  I called your office and verified  that We the  People of Austin  Never  Voted  to  Spend  Our  Tax  Dollars  subsidizing the Fat Cats!   Only you and some of your City Council,  in an apparent state of delirium, and perhaps motivated by greed and cronyism, voted to steal Millions from the Taxpayers and Citizens of Austin...In your ads you say "Honesty is the Best Policy."  Now is the time to be honest about just Who's Word Would We Be Keeping if We Voted no on Prop 2.  Mr. Mayor retract your lying ads and let the People of Austin fix your stupid mistakes by VOTING YES FOR PROPOSITION 2 !   YES FOR PROPOSITION 2  ... to Get Our Money Back!
Admit your mistakes and spend  some of those millions on "The Mayor's Neighborhood Garden Project."  In the 70's when I was in my 20's a grassroots group went to the Denver Mayor and asked him to help us start the Denver "Mayor's Neighborhood Garden Project."  It's still gardening strong 30 years later!  Mr Mayor, you like to pride yourself on being "Mayor of a Green City."    Let it be green with gardens and Native plants and not green with Greed!

Deb, shouldn't you be blockwalking for Nader? (0.00 / 0)
Deb,
For someone who is the state coordinator for the Nader/Gonzales presidential campaign you sure seem to have a lot of time trolling Democratic blogs supporting Prop 2.

I think the Domain subsidy is horrid on numerous levels but reasonable minds can disagree about whether this charter amendment is the best way to undo a bad deal. I personally oppose the subsidies but voted No on Prop 2.

Black Mamba, shouldn't you refrain from copy and paste jobs? (0.00 / 0)

I admit it. (0.00 / 0)
It was the lazy way out. But I spent more time on that than Deb seems to be doing flacking for Nader. No wonder he gets less and less votes each campaign!
