Dan Barrett Goes on TV in Battle for HD-97

by: Todd Hill

Thu Oct 30, 2008 at 01:00 PM CDT

The stakes just got much higher in the race for House District 97 in Tarrant County.  State Representative Dan Barrett launched a television ad this week highlighting Mark Shelton's connections to big banks, big insurance, and big credit card companies.  You know, the same guys we just bailed out?  Yeah, those guys.  The one's who are partially responsible for our current economic crisis:

Just in the month of October Speaker Tom Craddick, coupled with big banks, big insurance, and big credit card companies, poured over $400,000 into Shelton's bank account to take back this seat won by Democrat Dan Barrett in December 2007.  This race was recently labeled the #1 State House race in Texas by Capital Inside.  Send some of your loose change to Dan Barrett and keep this television ad running through Election Day.

If Democrats are to take back the State House this cycle it is absolutely crucial that House District 97 is held.  As goes HD-97, so goes the Democrats opportunity at the majority in Austin.

Now is the time to get involved and to hold House District 97.  There is plenty of work to be done this weekend leading up to Election Day.  The campaign would love for you to join their army of GOTV walkers, phone bankers, and poll workers this weekend, and on November 4th.

Do you want to be part of the Democrats historic recapturing of the State Legislature this cycle?  There is no greater campaign to be inspired by, or to make the crucial difference in taking back Austin, then that of Dan Barrett's.

Do I want a democratic majority... YES. Do I want Obama as president... YES. Do I want truth justice and equality... YES. However, this is absurd. This is not TRUTH. How is Shelton who is NOT and has NEVER been in office responsable for our finacial downfall??? WHERE on his finance campaign report does ANY bank show up as a donor? That 400,000 is mostly from medical PAC's and YES they are going to endorse a doctor... duh... I am sorry, I WANT us to win but I will not stoop to LIES. Period. IF Dan loses that race it will be a waste of money on top of honor.

Do not misunderstand my loyalties, but I WILL hold myself and my representatives accountable for both word and deed.

The end NEVER justifies the MEANS

I guess I do misunderstand your loyalties.

That said, the ad never implies that Shelton is responsible for the Wall Street collapse.  The ad correctly asks tough questions about who is Mark Shelton beholden to?

You see, when you accept donations from big insurance companies, you know, those guys who are responsible for skyrocking insurance costs in Texas?  There is access to be had there and favors to be granted.  You see, when credit card interests and banking interests donate to a candidate, there is access to be had there.  Favors are called in when legislators go to Austin from special interests sources like this.

Residents of HD-97 have an important question they must answer.  Would you trust a guy who has taken money from some of the same special interests responsible for our skyrocking insurance costs and the collapse on Wall Street, or a real, independent leader who has fought special interests and vowed to fight skyrocking insurance costs?

I'll take a fighter and leader in Dan Barrett any day over Mark Shelton.

Big insurance companies (0.00 / 0)
Correct. I thank Deejay220 for correcting me. I forgot TLR wasn't a medical pac and included them in my numbers. But the question remains. Which banks and credit card companies? I live in the heights area and most people here want to see our local representatives fix our "darn" roads, rather than hear accusations that a doctor is taking contirbutions from big bad insurance companies. we can win on the issues that matter to us here in fort worth, so we should stick to them. Character assasination only makes dan look bad and whiny, trust me on this. He won't win if he keeps this up.

Sorry but the $29,000 from Empower Texas, $45,000 from Bob Perry, $95,000 from Texans for Lawsuit Reform, $96,000 from the Republican Party, and $25,000 from the oil and gas industry kinda shoots down pajaro's assertion that Shelton's money came "mostly from the medical PACs". Shelton's average donation was more than $5,000 with 75% of all contributors giving $1,000 or more.  On the other hand, 70% of Barrett contributors gave at $100 or less.

The ad doesn't say Shelton is responsible for the financial mess. He is just pledged to support (and taking fistfuls of cash) from those who are.
