It has the right to do this!  Playboy is clearly not the image the university wants to portray.  MANY women's groups would agree and add pornography denigrates women, so it's not a clearcut "Baylor is bad and here is why" issue.

They wrote the same story four or five years ago, the last time did a "Girls of the Big 12" spread (pun intended).  And guess what?  The Baylor girls found their way into the pages of Playboy.  Thanks, Baylor, for doing Playboy's marketing for them.

The times I've been there, all athletic tournaments in their rec facilities, the "official" Baylor Hosts have been adorable, perky, flawless girls in short shorts and very tight tee shirts, and I'm not talkin' cheerleaders.  And there were swarms of 'em.  Baylor just dudn't want the daddies who read playboy to figure out they are using their nubile daughters to market the school.  Baylor makes me sick.

So you're saying that the two are the same?  Tell that to any bar's cocktail waitresses, "Ya know, you're no better than strippers."  I'm sure they'll nod and happily agree... or perhaps not. 

The truth of the matter is there is a spectrum.  Schools like Bob Jones and Moody Bible College require their women to wear a full length dress every day.  Baylor, being "normal" believes the women are mature enough to make their own decision with some obviously forbidden activities excluded.  I can assure you those women CHOSE to wear what they did, and you seem to be judging them and saying they were "sluts" for it.  THAT is awful judgemental, isn't it?

Come on people, this is one of the few issues the extreme right (Christian fundies) and the extreme left (Feminists, or at least some of them) have complete agreement on. 

We all know why this was frontpaged, bashing Baylor is such a hobby for some people.  It's something SMU and TCU do not have to deal with.  We (Baylor Alumni) don't regularly attack all of ya'll UT students...

A million years ago, when I was at UT, Baylor kicked a guy out for having a pinup on his wall. A college kid. For having a pinup. (not that I think the existence of photographs objectifying women is a good thing, I don't , but getting upset at young people for having these pictures is silly). I think there are better uses of an administration's time.

Baylor's Academic Reputation (2.00 / 1)

The prudishness of the Baylor administration seems somewhat humorous when discussing Playboy, but there is nothing amusing about the university’s stance on sexual orientation.  The student policy handbook goes so far as to prohibit students from participating in any GLBT advocacy groups.  In 2004, the student newspaper ran an editorial supporting same sex marriages.  The administration quickly condemned the editorial.  Baylor administrators, like many Baptists, reject the obvious (to me anyway) truth that sexual orientation is an immutable characteristic.

I’m a Baylor graduate.  I had some wonderful professors, and I don’t feel my undergraduate education suffered because of Baylor’s Baptist affiliation.  I also have a degree from UT.  During my time in Austin, people would occasionally ask me about Baylor.  At the time, I was genuinely surprised to discover other people’s impressions of Baylor.  In short, I learned that Baylor’s Baptist affiliation adversely affected its academic reputation more than I had realized. 

Many Baylor administrators and alumni want the school to develop into a first-rate university and remain officially associated with the Baptist General Convention of Texas.  I don’t think both can be achieved.  Incidents like the same sex marriage editorial controversy certainly don’t help.

Marc, I couldn't agree more with your response with what happened.  The Sloan administration cracked down on homosexuality moreso than any administration since the 1960's.  It was a tragedy, the kind that often happen when fascist (I know that's a harsh word and I use it deliberately) leaders take over.  Luckily, those days are over.  Baylor has a new administration that is FAR FAR better.  Although Baylor will probably never welcome homosexuality as a valid lifechoice, the new administration will work WITH the students in the same way it works with heterosexual students caught having sex (which is also in the handbook you quote as forbiden).  This will NOT result in the students being removed from the University (or else there wouldn't be many students left!!!).

The only way WE can change Baylor, as alumni, is if we join together and fight for change from the inside.  I really hope you'll rejoin the folds.  Baylor is a special school in Texas history (more Democratic Governors of Texas than ANY other school, I believe) and it can grow and become even better than it is today.  Merely publically attacking Baylor does nothing to help its reputation and continues to propogate those negative steriotypes (which, I have seen as well living in Austin).
