TDP Invests in Supreme Court Races

by: Michael Hurta

Fri Oct 24, 2008 at 00:41 PM CDT

For all the past criticism of the local Democratic establishment for not investing in lower statewide races, it seems someone has listened.  With about a week and a half to go, the Texas Democratic Party has decided to invest $800,000 into television advertisements for the small slate of Texas Supreme Court candidates.

From the Quorum Report:

The Texas Democratic Party has committed $800,000 to a statewide ad buy pushing the Democratic slate of candidates for the Texas Supreme Court, QR has learned.

The ad criticizes the Court, which doesn't have a single Democratic justice, for excessively favoring insurance companies in its decisions as well as overturning jury verdicts more than 80 percent of the time. They began airing yesterday and could be seen yesterday evening, for example, during local newscasts in Austin.

TDP spokesman Hector Nieto said that the intent is to run the ad in major markets across the state. "The TDP has purchased ad time to help promote our candidates," he said. "The buy is significant enough to be seen throughout the state of Texas."

If there was ever a court that needed balance (5.00 / 1)
It's this one.  We need to start taking back some seats on this court so that the court actually administers justice fairly for Texans.  It's 100% Republican and business controlled now.

GREAT NEW WEBSITE! http://www.fairandbalancedcourt.com/ (0.00 / 0)
Here's a flavor of the Fair-and-Balanced-Court website:

Can a court made up of all Republicans really be fair and balanced?

The Texas Supreme Court is made up of nine Republicans. Independent studies confirm that the justices overturn jury verdicts 82% of the time and rule with insurance company special interests 87% of the time.1

The Republican court protects its millionaire donors.

Retirees Bob and Jane Cull of Mansfield were sold a defective home by Perry Homes. The Culls were originally awarded $800,000 for their loss. The Texas Supreme Court overturned the ruling in favor of Perry Homes, leaving the Culls with nothing. Bob Perry, the millionaire owner of Perry Homes, and his family have donated over $300,000 to the nine Republican justices on the Supreme Court.2

Way to go TDP! (5.00 / 1)
I am so proud of the TDP for raising the money and putting this commercial on the air. It was well done and gets the message across.
It is difficult for challengers to raise the money to do this kind of statewide oureach in judicial races. Doing the commercial for all three TX SC candidates was an excellent idea. This is how coordinated campaigns are run.
