Race Boating: Swift Boat funder Bob Perry funds racist direct mail

by: Glenn Smith

Wed Oct 22, 2008 at 04:24 PM CDT

Swift Boat funder Robert Perry, a top national Republican donor, is funding overtly racist attack mail this cycle. It's not Swift Boating. It's Race Boating.

A group called "Empower Texans," chaired by Tim Dunn of Midland, an associate of Republican Texas House Speaker Tom Craddick, attacked Democratic state House candidate Joel Redmond of Pasadena with a direct mail piece featuring fuzzy images of black and Hispanic lawmakers (plus Barack Obama), several black birds resembling crows, and a picture of the white Redmund. The tag line:  "Birds of a feather flock together."

Anyone with any racial sensitivity gets the meaning of the mailer:  Redmond has betrayed whites by befriending people of color. He can't be trusted.

This is happening in the Houston area, down the road from Tom DeLay. George Bush's hometown. While an African-American, Barack Obama, is the Democratic nominee for president.

Today's Race Boaters aren't like the Swift Boaters. They ARE the Swift Boaters. Bob Perry. Tom DeLay. Tom Craddick. The same people whose 2002 campaign funding scheme led to Tuesday's guilty plea from the Texas Association of Business, another organization with close ties to the Race Boaters. That plea came from the same investigation that led to the indictment against DeLay.

Allen Blakemore seems intent on destroying the Texas Republican Party although of course 39%, reflective of those who voted for Rick Perry, are quite proud of the racist agenda that has become the foundation of the Texas Republican Party.

You do have to wonder how African-American Republicans manage to justify being Republicans at this point. Perhaps they believe they are no longer African-Americans but WASPS.  In reality they are still just the white man's boys. That includes Wallace Jefferson who thinks being African-American and Republican is something to be proud of.

By the same token there are racist Democrats who will vote for McCain. They are the ones who will possibly ensure McCain wins.  I blame the Clintons for encouraging them.

This country has been divided along racial lines by the Republicans. Reality is a house divided eventually falls. The reaction by Rush Limbaugh to Colin Powell's endorsement of Obama just summed up the racism of the Republicans but also opened the barn door and this is just one of many racist mailings and probably ads to come in the next week. But it's not just the racism. It's the xenophobia. Cultural and religious xenophobia.

As for Bob Perry he is just the perfect example of what's wrong with our campaign finance laws but in reality the Democrats don't want to restrict campaign finance any more than the Republicans do.  What's good for the goose obviously isn't so good for the gander.

As for those who have bought Perry homes and townhomes through the years, be proud of yourselves. You financed this garbage.
