TX-10: Doherty Picks Up Endorsement from Former Primary Opponent

by: David Mauro

Sun Oct 12, 2008 at 00:57 PM CDT

After receiving 39 percent in the Democratic Primary in March, Dan Grant has officially endorsed the man who defeated him, Larry Joe Doherty.

Grant said Texans needed a break from "McCaulonomics"  and that a Doherty victory would help District 10 uphold the proud history of Lyndon B. Johnson and Jake Pickle.

From Grant's press release, picked up from the Austin Chronicle's News Desk blog:

Middle-class families and small businesses have been pushed to the brink of bankruptcy by the administration’s economic incompetence,” Grant said. “In the midst of the most serious financial crisis since the Great Depression, Larry Joe Doherty wants to turn the page — and Mike McCaul wants to laminate it.”

Grant said the fact that the 10th Congressional District’s boundaries were redrawn during a controversial redistricting scheme pushed by disgraced former Congressman Tom DeLay is part of the same culture of corruption that has led to the current financial crisis.

“Central Texas deserves a fresh start under new leadership,” Grant said. “No more endless war in Iraq, no more Katrina, no more McCaulonomics putting at risk the pension and small business of ordinary taxpayers who work hard and play by the rules.”

Actually, 100% of what you put in that block quote is from Grant's press release and not anything that I wrote. But thanks for the link to our blog. - Lee Nichols

Too weird to be a Texan, too Texan to live anywhere else.

Thanks for catching that.

that was fast (0.00 / 0)
why the lengthy delay?

Great question..... (5.00 / 1)
Let's see, most of us realized on March 5th that the voters of the 10th District spoke overwhelmingly in favor of Larry Joe Doherty....in fact if memory doesn't fail me, didn't he carry EVERY county in the district.

My calculations from March 5 to now are about 7 months.  Hillary Clinton conceeded a race for the Presidency to Barack Obama within five days of the last primary and caucus and has been out working on his behalf.

On the other hand, Eugene McCarthy waited until the weekend before the election in 1968 to endorse Hubert Humphrey and you see what that got us.

While always see the party come together behind its nominees, timeliness sometimes says a whole lot about its effectiveness and the intent of the endorser.

Go Larry Joe!
The 10ths next great Congressman in the footsteps of James Buchanan, Lyndon Johnson, Homer Thornberry, Jake Pickle and Lloyd Doggett.

I think Dan's been busy (0.00 / 0)
getting married can do that to a guy -

Congratulations and Right On, Dan!

He's a damn good Democrat with a bright future in public service -

Very unimpressive... (5.00 / 1)
You don't wait seven months to endorse your primary opponent unless you're a very sore loser.  And sore losers rarely have bright futures.

SORE LOSER??? (0.00 / 0)
Give him a break!  It takes time to come up with such original lines as: [insert Republican's name here] ONOMICS.  What he did say that really concerned me about Congressman McCaul was "no more Katrina".  So much so that I called Congressman McCaul's office. Although they could not convince me that McCaul does not control the weather they did make me aware that Katrina has been retired as a hurricane name.  WHEW!!!

I guess I do wish he had come out a few months ago and called for no more Ike.

Of course he doesn't control the weather (0.00 / 0)
As the 385th most powerful Representative, McCaul doesn't control much of anything.

If the power rankings = control (0.00 / 0)
and 93 of the top 100 most powerful Congressmen and 20 of the top 25 Senators are Democrats why are they whining about the economy?

RANKINGS FOR THE WEEK AHEAD: It should be a crazy upcoming week in world political power rankings.  Barney Frank should move into the top 5 with a strong week of partisan TV appearances and the backing of former Fannie executive and lover Herb Moses.  Pelosi should solidify #1 with her announcement that she'd like to spend, 150 billion more after the election.  On the strength of being #3 in earmarks Murtha can bust the top 10 as Waco's own Chet Edwards can use his strong earmark rank (#5) to start next week in the top 25.

On the Senate side Kerry, Levin and Byrd will have a chance to battle the Presidential election loser for the coveted 10th spot in the rankings as Obama and McCain are ranked 10 & 11.  One will be leaving and the other politically wounded.  In this mini race Byrd may have the edge with southern democratic  power ranking voters on the strength of his former leadership positions in the KKK as Kleagle and Exalted Cyclops.
