TEXAS WINS! TEXAS WINS! TEXAS WINS!

by: Phillip Martin, Progress Texas

Sat Oct 11, 2008 at 02:53 PM CDT

I'm not even going to pretend that I'm anything less than ecstatic. Texas just played the best game they've played since they beat USC in the title game a few years ago. That was an excellent OU team, with a potent offense, that we stopped. Flat. And Colt McCoy ran a disciplined, excellent offense to victory.

It's 3:00pm, and OU still sucks. We beat them, and we should celebrate that today!

As for my predictions (which at least one reader thought was suspect):

  • Texas will win a close high scoring game. CHECK!
  • UT will be down early in the first quarter. CHECK!
  • We will have at least two major special-teams plays. CHECK! (The Shipley TD and the stopped faked punt attempt)
  • The defense will score a touchdown. I missed this one, but an intereception at the end of the first half led to a crucial field gaol.

Overall, a total, complete win for the Longhorns. I'm celebrating tonight. How about you?

GO HORNS!

not to correct you Phil, but. . . . (0.00 / 0)
the time is now 3:15 - and OU STILL SUCKS!!!

Awesome game (3.00 / 1)
I don't care that I'm posting a comment on my own post, I'm too pumped up, and I'm out on a farm in upstate NY so I have no one else to celebrate with.

That was a BIG win. I mean, a real, real good win. We just outplayed a really, really good team. Other than USC, I don't know if there's a better team this year than Oklahoma.

We'll have to do a lot to concentrate on a home game against high-scoring Mizzou next weekend, but damn -- I'm feeling good today. I have the unfortunate reality of being in the northeast for all these games, so the only one I've been able to watch was the UTEP game. Now, I believe we have a shot at running the table.

It's a tough conference -- and we have the hardest schedule of anyone -- but if we can step up like we did today and play with as much resiliency, I think we've got a chance to play for the national title.

Now, a very great man once said that some people rob you with a fountain pen.

Oh, no. We know this is a big deal. (3.00 / 4)
It's a metaphor for the presidential race, after all...with Texas being Obama (maybe literally, in 2012).

1st Quarter was the leadup to the Iowa caucus vs. Hillary Clinton.  The weakness was there (as they couldn't run up the score), but everyone had already anointed Hillary (OU) the winner.  But Texas (Obama) won't just fold up.

After the half we shifted into the general election campaign with Texas (Obama) seting the pace of the race, even if down a little in the score (polls).  Colt McCoy (David Plouffe) rallies the troops and Texas is way ahead with 4 minutes (24 days) left in the game, and the losers (McCain) cannot keep up with the onslaught of defense and careful offense.

:p

TEXAS FIGHT!

Who else has fun analogies to today's game to politics?

That crying kid pictured above? (3.00 / 3)
That's what Republicans are going to look like shortly after the polls close on November 4th, 2008.

Especially all of the ones desperately trying to hold on to thei Congress or Senate Seat.

That was a great game (3.00 / 3)
The Longhorns outscored the Sooners 25-7 after stopping the (fake punt), and their half of the record crowd of 92,182 fans loved every bit of it. When Oklahoma's game-ending heave was picked off in the back of the end zone, Texas defensive end Brian Orapko dropped to his knees and thrust his arms up. Teammates ran to him and piled on for their wildest celebration since their last victory over a No. 1 -- against Southern Cal in the January 2006 Rose Bowl.

Then the Longhorns went to the burnt-orange end of the field and enjoyed perhaps the loudest rendition of "Eyes of Texas" in the 103-game history of this Red River Rivalry. They gathered for the trophy presentation, then a few players ran off for a victory lap along the stands, slapping hands and waving their arms.

With the win, Texas (6-0, 2-0 Big 12) grabs the inside track in both the conference and national championship races. History shows the Longhorns should think big. The last two teams to come out of this game unbeaten -- Oklahoma in 2004, Texas in 2005 -- went on to play for the national title. And the last time the Longhorns knocked off the Sooners when they were No. 1 was 1963, which turned into Darrell Royal's first national championship.

That's goign to be some pretty fun history to match.

I hope you are still wrong on your political predictions but I love the win today....

Hey (3.00 / 1)
Way to show up and make a positive comment after earlier. I respect that.

Unfortunately, I think most of our predictions for electoral politics will be accurate. :)

Check in on Monday/Tuesday, when we have our big release of political predictions.

What a game!! (3.00 / 1)
Sam Bradford was the best player on the field, but he couldn't win this one by himself. UT completely shut down the OU running game, and OU couldn't stop the 'Horns in the late going. The 'Horns owned the 4th quarter.

Above all, UT showed heart. For most of the first half, the game was on the verge of getting out of control, and the 'Horns kept clawing back into it. I was scared that our young secondary would freak out, but (with a few costly exceptions) they played great. Time and again, Bradford had all day to pass and couldn't find anybody.

While I'd love to beat Mizzou next week, the important games are the OSU, Tech, and Kansas games. If we win those, we'll get a second game with Mizzou for the Big 12 championship, and if we win the conference with only one loss we'll go to the national championship game.

HOOK 'EM!

This is me yelling at you (3.00 / 1)
For using all caps.

But I can understand. There are only a couple of times where we suspend the NO ALL CAPS policy. Electoral wins... and football.

Psshhhh (3.00 / 1)
ALL CAPS is totally justified in this setting. Thanks for understanding, boss.

Texas wins big and OU really sucks at 6:30 (3.00 / 1)
WOW, what an incredible game. Finally back in the hotel room to recover and watch Mizzou play tonight. We'll see how Texas ends up in the polls after this game.

After Bradford's drive in the 1st quarter I was hoping for the best and preparing for the worst. The Shipley runback really pumped the crowd.

2nd half was great up until 4th quarter when Longhorns took complete control.

Someone had to dig into the archives for that picture. I remember it well when they showed it on the big screen in the stadium that year.

Awesome game and the newly renovated Cotton Bowl is great. I sure hope the game stays here and doesn't succomb to Jerry Jones' greed. The Fair adds so much to the game.

As always Texas and OU fans show real class before and after the game. The mood in the fair after was good also.

Phillip I know how hard it is away from your home base. Hopefully you didn't freak out the people and animals at the farm.

loving it (3.00 / 2)
I'm especially proud of naming this blog the Burnt Orange Report today.  Go Horns! What a game! I just wish we could have beaten OU when I was a student at UT.

I confess.... (5.00 / 1)
I'm a transplanted Sooner and part of a mixed marriage (the wife is a UT Grad)and the kids ended up with all of those burnt orange genes...It's been a long day. Since 3 p.m. I've been subjected to more end zone dances, booty slapping and hook'em signs than a man can handle...Yep - as my son keeps reminding me - we got SERVED. UT deserved to win. Bradford is the only reason it was even close...and Colt - what can you say? The guy is a legend, with leadership qualities up there with Vince and Major.

Agree about Colt (0.00 / 0)
His post-game interview with ESPN was classic. He showed so much maturity in how he handled the situation and gave praise to Sam Bradford also. You can tell this boy was raised right.
