Dan Barrett Bests Mark Shelton in Fundraising

by: Todd Hill

Tue Oct 07, 2008 at 03:06 PM CDT

State Representative Dan Barrett outpaced his opponent, Republican Mark Shelton, by raising $168,406 since July, while still holding $113,549 cash on hand in this pivotal re-match for House District 97.  You'll recall that Barrett rocked Texas by defeating Craddick's pawn, Shelton, in the Special Election held in December 2007 to replace retired Republican Anna Mowery.

Dan Barrett had this to say about his report:

"I am truly humbled by the tremendous support my campaign has received, but especially humbled by the people from within the District who have contributed to my campaign in these tough economic times," stated Barrett.

Barrett's opponent reported having raised $119,569, spending $55,693, and retaining $86,669 cash on hand.  When you discount Shelton's personal loan of $48,541 he has $38,128 in real donations to his campaign. That leaves Barrett with a $75,421 cash on hand advantage in the final stretch toward November 4th in the race that Capitol Inside recently ranked as the #1 State House race in Texas.

Once more the tale of HD-97's race is all in the numbers.  Barrett demonstrated incredibly strong grassroots and local donor support with 88% of his contributions having come from North Texas donors, and 75% of donations coming from cities encompassing House District 97.  That is amazingly strong constituent support for a Democrat running for re-election in a district that tilts Republican.  It shows that Barrett has worked hard to establish himself as a hard-working, independent minded leader with people's interests at heart.

Shelton, on the other hand, continues to demonstrate that special interests are kept close to his heart.  Among other donors, Tom Craddick's TexPAC donated $10k, matched by the infamous Bob Perry with his own $10k.  With the current energy crisis we have on our hands it is interesting to note the $5k from the Oil & Gas PAC too.  There is certainly more to come from this group who donated more than $150K to Shelton in his primary race.  Looks like Shelton has laid his political life at the feet of the traditional Craddick/Perry/special interest slot machines.

Barrett's campaign continues its push toward Election Day by communicating with voters about Dan's plan to address escalating utility and insurance rates while changing the way business is done in Austin.

I'm sad to say this but Dan has no chance. That district is 3:1 Republican. It's like getting a Democrat elected in Utah it will never happen. We are just wasting time and resources on that race. Hell would freeze over before Dan wins that race in a general election.

I'm very enthusiastic about the fundraising pace he's kept and I know the kind of constituent work he's done in the last year. Job well done Rep. Barrett, I look forward to seeing your work in the legislature in your first real term. I've seen the district, I'm working a similar one right now. I know Dan can win.

Dan=No Chance (0.00 / 0)
Dan can fundraise all he wants but in the end it won't work. If you ask a normal person (that is not political) they would not know who Dan is. On down ballot races most people just vote their party affiliation and it's 3:1 Republican. It's nothing about Dan it's just the demographics of this area.
