TX-10: New Poll Has McCaul 43, Doherty 38

by: Phillip Martin, Progress Texas

Thu Oct 02, 2008 at 09:36 AM CDT

New numbers from a new TX-10 poll: Democrat Larry Joe Doherty has gained 4 percentage points on McCaul in the latest poll. McCaul, meanwhile, has remained stagnant at 43%, while Doherty is now at 38%.

The poll was taken from Sept. 28-30, 2008. Four hundred registered, likely 2008 voters were interviewed.

Highlights of the poll (click for link):

  • 4 in 10 likely voters don't even know who McCaul is.
  • The limited gains McCaul has had in name ID have all been negative.
  • McCaul's job rating is 33% positive, 38% negative, and 29% unsure – his negative rating has risen 9 points since May.
Momentum, your name is Doherty.

Looks like McCaul needs a lifeline.  Why don't we throw him an anchor.  Give here! https://co.clickandpledge.com/...

Fight on!

Unfortunately, bailout issue will help McCaul (0.00 / 0)
McCaul, Doggett and Doherty are all against the bailout. When was the last time those three agreed on anything?!

The trouble for Doherty is that McCaul gets attention and good press for voting against the bill, while Doherty gets ignored while speaking against the bill. This issue also undercuts the "McCaul is just a GOP flunky who votes the party line" argument (which was true for 3.5 years, until McCaul got scared and started running away from Bush), and the "who the heck is Michael McCaul?" argument.

Even so, Larry Joe has a real shot at winning this thing. It will take a big effort to crank up the turnout in blue areas, especially in Travis County, and it will take some national events (like Palin making a fool of herself tonight) to tamp down GOP turnout in Harris County.

As for me, I'll be walking my precinct for Larry Joe Doherty, Donna Howard, Obama/Biden, and the rest of the Democratic ticket this weekend.
