Coping Post-Ike

by: Michael Hurta

My family is now split up in 3 parts of Texas.  My dad, who decided to stay and work on the house at home and do some other stuff, is lucky enough to know of an air-conditioned house in Houston to stay in.  My mom and sister are at my grandparents' house in Bastrop county, and I'm the lucky one here in Austin.

Unable to speak with us directly, my father has sent us text messages.

Huge pile of large branches.  12 piles of smaller branches, and that is just the front yard

And we're the lucky ones.  My mom told me that she drove through parts of Houston seeing trees through roofs; even of two-story buildings.  My roommate said a tornado went down his street (and thankfully spared his house.)

Remember guys and gals, this is only Houston.  An hour from Galveston, it can't even compare to the wreckage there.  I hope most of you, like me, are the lucky ones.

Many parents of Houstonians at UT are up in Austin now to sleep somewhere with electricity.  If you are here due to Ike, whether from before or after impact, I'd recommend looking back at Phillip's Netroots Nation Resource Page.  Perhaps you'll find ways of solace in this nice town.  Until your lives are back up and running, be careful and stay safe.

Media Focus... (0.00 / 0)
Let us not forget our friends and family in the Beaumont/Port Arthur/Orange area. I have three friends and family members thus far who have lost their houses due to fallen trees in Hardin, Jefferson, and Orange counties.

Indeed (0.00 / 0)
Houston has the biggest population of any single area that got hit.

But in comparison to elsewhere, the city as a whole was lucky.  It means more to  me because I lived there a vast majority of my life, and by some definitions (like my voter registration), I still do.  That said, I sympathize deeply with those nearer to the coast.  I have a great-aunt and great-uncle who have lived in Galveston for as long as I know; and I have no clue what they will do now.  (I just haven't heard from them other than that they are ok [thank god]).

That said, I encourage readers from closer to the coast to post their accounts.  This natural disaster affects our state deeply, and as Texans we should soak it in as much as possible.

"Let us tenderly and kindly cherish therefore, the means of knowledge. Let us dare to read, think, speak, and write."  -  John Adams

Dont expect (0.00 / 0)
any reports from the coast any time soon. Many people are struggling to put their homes back together. Many others have bad water and no electricity. Those Galvestonians that fled from Ike are not being allowed back home either. It's a tough time for communities close to the coast...but the people down there are very resilient and will rebound from Ike very soon.

on another note...I'm so pissed that Bud Selig made the Astros go to Milwaukee last night considering many had family and loved ones back home dealing with the aftermath of Ike. I'll be a happy man at the end of Bud Selig's rein.
