Voters Tell Craddick: Time for Change

by: Phillip Martin, Progress Texas

Tue Apr 11, 2006 at 10:32 PM CDT

(Wanted to keep this post on top through the night. - promoted by Phillip Martin)

The biggest story from today's run-off: candidates backed by Speaker Craddick only won 1 out of 6 contested House races.

The voters are sending a clear message to the Speaker and the rest of the Republican machine: the time of failed leadership, corrupt practices, and power politics is over. The voters want change, and they're telling all of us loud and clear.

Here are the races in question:

1) Richard Raymond defeated Mercurio Martinez, Jr., 57.76-42.24%, in House District 42. Raymond - a Killer D leader- overcame Martinez, who worked closely with many of Craddick's closest advisers in Austin.

2) Boris Miles defeated Al Edwards, 53.54-46.46%, in House District 147. Edwards was the only House Democrat to vote with Craddick and the Republicans for the tax bill during the 79th Regular Session.

3) Jimmie Don Aycock defeated Dale Hopkins, 57.9-42.1%, in House District 54. Aycock was the Parent PAC candidate, and unconfirmed reports showed that Hopkins received as much as $150,000 in Leininger money in the final days of their campaign.

4) Susan King defeated Kevin Christian, 50.5-49.5% - by 103 votes - in House District 71. King was the Parent PAC candidate.

5) Drew Darby defeated Scott Campbell, 61.2-38,8%, in House District 72. Darby was the Parent PAC candidate.

6) Tan Parker defeated Anne Lakusta, 50.4-49.6%, in House District 63. Lakusta - who lost by only 48 votes - was the Parent PAC candidate. This was the only race a Craddick-backed candidate won on Tuesday.

Combined with the defeat of Republican Reps. Kent Grusendorf and Elvira Reyna during the primaries, today's elections represent the growing shift in Texas politics away from the Speaker's brand of corruption and incompetence. With the success of Democratic progressive candidates - and the growing force of the Parent PAC and education groups - I'd expect we'll see a great deal more change come November.

Agreed! (0.00 / 0)
If I end up with Parker as my representative, I'll puke!  At least Lakusta would have been decent when it comes to education.

Pick your poison -- I'll live with Parker (0.00 / 0)
Frankly (as someone who lives just outside HD63) I'm relieved Parker won, actually:

* Lakusta is scary but SKILLFUL.  Her great claim-to-fame as a Lewisville ISD school board member was eliminating sex ed.

* Parker on the other hand is scary, but plastic lawn furniture.  Seriously.  His great claim-to-fame was interning at the Reagan White House.  He's Aubrey's answer to Bob Forehead.

So first, Parker is infinitely more vulnerable to a Dem challenger over the next couple cycles (as that district becomes more and more favorable in terms of demographics -- just look at the anti-gentrification going on in Lewisville right now), and second, Lakusta had the potential to become a serious, skilled, entrenched member of the Republican leadership -- another Jane Nelson -- that it would be all-but-impossible to get rid of.

Dem challenger? (1.00 / 1)
The only way a Dem is getting elected to this seat is if the Rep. candidate dies in a plane crash. You must not be from this area because if you were you would know that the Dem party and their candidates are AWOL.

Flower Mound, etc. (0.00 / 0)
The wealth and conservatism of Flower Mound, Highland Village, Double Oak, etc. offsets whatever may be happening in Lewisville.

Except... (0.00 / 0)
Flower Mound, Double Oak, and Highland Village are all pretty-much built-out, thanks to their large lot-size requirements.  The amount of "affluent" housing in District 63 is growing at a MUCH slower pace than the amount of "affordable" housing... in Lewisville, Aubrey, extreme N. Ft. Worth (by the Speedway), Krum, Sanger, etc.

As the once-rural parts of Denton County become increasingly lower-middle-class suburban, we need a strategy to become successful in those areas.  Demographically, those voters are are core constituency and we need to reach them.

What remains to be seen is whether 63 can flip (especially now with a golden-boy conveniently named "Tan" as the other side's incumbent) before the 2012 election, when it will almost-assuredly be carved up as Denton County goes from 3 to 4+ state House districts.

Oops (0.00 / 0)
That should have read "are OUR core constituency" *blush*

What a dreamer (1.00 / 1)
Maybe you  should work on recruiting candidates for races before you start talking about flipping anything. It's hard to win if you don't run.

Lakusta challenge (0.00 / 0)
I assume you mean she will ask for a recount. She would be an idiot to do this, they already had a recount in the primary race and nothing changed. The only thing she will accomplish is losing 5k. Lakusta could have won this if she wouldn't have gone negative, I think it backfired on her big time. Parker will far and away be a much better Representative.

I support change (5.00 / 1)
Happy to see Richard Raymond coming back and Al Edwards gone.  I hope that these new Parent PAC republicans are going to help us change the Texas House back to a body that actually governs.

May Craddick's days be numbered as Speaker of the House.

Miles victory party (0.00 / 0)
I just got back from the Borris Miles victory party. Talked a lot about representing the entire district, better public education and lowering the "graduation to incarceration" rate. Thanked his insurance agency staff, Women for Boris Miles, Black Dems, and all the state reps and local officials who supported him, as well as Al Edwards for his years of service. Borris looked exhausted but thrilled, and stately too.

What a night.

Thanks for the report, Ryan! (0.00 / 0)
Huge win for Miles. Those guys ran a great race!

Great seeing you again, Ryan. (0.00 / 0)
And great wins all around last night.

Al Edwards Runoff - Who Won? (0.00 / 0)
The Texas Secretary of State website shows Edwards the winner with over 51% of the vote. Looks like Craddick's buddy squeaked through. Will there be a recount? The victory party for Borris Miles sounds a little premature.

that is the early vote (0.00 / 0)
Miles won with 53% overall

Parent PAC (0.00 / 0)
Will someone go into detail a little about Parent PAC.  They seem to have had a great special.  Who are they and how did they arrive at their success?

Bluebelle, you just read the early vote numbers... (0.00 / 0)
Al Edwards lost, 53.5-46.5. You can shake your booty.
