John Culberson Enables Culture of Corruption

by: Matt Glazer

Sat Sep 06, 2008 at 02:40 PM CDT

On the heels of Jack Abramoff's conviction and sentencing, Mike Skelly praises the federal judge's decision and criticized John Culberson for voting against the investigation that brought Abramoff to justice.

"Jack Abramoff was at the center of a culture of corruption that John Culberson enabled," said Skelly.  "By voting against a Congressional investigation into Jack Abramoff, Culberson sent a very clear message:  business as usual in Washington, no matter how crooked, is fine by him."

"John Culberson is a classic DC insider, the kind of politician who would stand with a corrupt lobbyist instead of with the taxpayers he was elected to represent," added Skelly.

In 2006, Culberson voted against an immediate investigation by the House Ethics Committee into the Jack Abramoff scandal.

Just a reminder of what's at stake for this November.

The Reality of the Texas Republican Party (0.00 / 0)
The party itself promotes the corruption and the string-pulling and the outright obstruction. "Corrupt and Proud of It." That is the motto of the Texas Republican Party. And until the bubbas in the backwoods can no longer afford to put gas in their pickup trucks or the Democrats manage to get enough people to actually vote after they register to vote, nothing will change.  There is power in numbers and the Republicans so far have the numbers.

Just the same, Culberson is not exactly Mr. Popularity in parts of his district.  Between the disaster of the Katy Freeway and the Richmond rail line, formerly known as the Westpark rail line,  Skelly may pull some moderate Republican votes. Some have criticized Skelly for shunning the "liberal" and "progressive" associations within the Democratic Party.  That would be the kiss of death in Culberson's district.  All is fair in love and war and politics but the reality is that Skelly is a moderate more than a centrist. And one thing going for him is the wind power connection. A lot of Republicans have begun to take alternative energy seriously. Particularly those who live in Katy who still only have the Katy Freeway to get to work.  The only difference between the old and the new Katy Freeway will be that the gridlock moves a little faster. Probably about 2 mph faster. And even at $3.50 a gallon, that is not really solving anyone's problem. Particularly when they come home and open up the light bill.

Republicans will vote for Skelly because he offers some real solutions.  Democrats should do the same.
