GOP Judges in Dallas Go Dem

by: Michael Hurta

Tue Sep 02, 2008 at 09:33 AM CDT

The writing on the wall has been obvious for years, and for judges who care more about their specific seats than their party, the choice is obvious: The Democrats have it winning and have it right now.

Five judges have made the switch since last year, and the movement isn't over yet.  From the Dallas Morning News:

As Texas Republicans gather for their national convention, GOP members back in Dallas are preparing to bolt the party.

Monday, Dallas County Court at Law Judge Mark Greenberg plans to announce at a Democratic Party Labor Day picnic that he's leaving the Republican Party, said people from both parties familiar with his decision. The judge, who next faces re-election in 2010, could not be reached.

At least two other judges are expected to leave the GOP before November.

Do actions like this create need for less partisan judicial races?  Or is it right that moth judges be part of the winning party at the time?

It's definitely a question being asked many times by the Dallas Republicans right now.  And whatever the Democrats think on the issue, right now it's all benefiting the progressive party.  So the switches are helping with something.

Merely going where the votes are? (0.00 / 0)
Some of the judges are merely switching parties to ensure they stay on the bench. But some may be switching parties because they simply do not identify with the Republican Party any longer and its evolution from the "kinder, gentler" nation of George HW Bush to the "meaner, nastier" nation of George W Bush. Just as the Democratic Party left Ronald Reagan, the Republican Party has left a growing number of Republicans.  Both parties in a way have left everyone. At least the Democratic Party is attempting to remain the party of the people while the Republican Party is attempting to become the party of just some of the people. Whether Democratic or Republican, Texans need to be more careful about who they put on these benches.

I lived and worked In Dallas many years when I made the switch from USAF computer services officer to programmer analyst and remember the time when judges were switching from Democratic to Repugnants as the dark syde of the force was in ascendancy.  After all judges are lawyers who crossed over; and who can trust a lawyer.

Lawyers (0.00 / 0)
Lawyers wrote the Declaration of Independence and Constitution. Lawyers secured your right to be warned before custodial interogation by the police, to have integrated schools, and warnings on unsafe products. There are good lawyers who fight for our civil and constitutional rights every day.
I have a bumper sticker on my car that says  "Lincoln was a trial lawyer" and another that says, "Lawyers, the First Patriots".

We should welcome converts like Judge Greenburg (0.00 / 0)
I've tried cases in front of Judge Greenberg and found him to be one of the few fair Republican judges on the bench before the 2006 sweep.  Welcome to the Democratic side, Judge.

A case for "non-partisan" judicial elections.... (0.00 / 0)
To be fair, and honest, there are some really fair, and honest, Republican judges on the benches. The problem is the little (R) beside their names on the ballots. But electing those with the little (D) beside their names on the ballots is no guarantee of anything. Our entire judiciary has been corrupted by partisan politics.  Judges should be about law and the Constitution. Not about political agenda.
