Update On Maverick County

by: Vince Leibowitz

Tue Apr 11, 2006 at 04:02 PM CDT

In attempting to get an update out of Maverick County, I tried calling the county clerk's office down there, but the line was busy. I was, however, able to get in touch with the County Judge's office, and the judge's secretary informed me that volunteers were writing Barbara Radnofsky's name on the ballots so that those voting today will be able to vote a full ballot.

Also, QR has reported that "given the voting turnout in Maverick County, it's unlikely the vote tally would have a major impact on the election overall. [SOS Spokesman] Haywood said the ballot issue is relevant only if it has an impact on the final outcome of Radnofsky's runoff race against perennial candidate Gene Kelly."

As you may have noted from the comments, however, it may indeed become a relevant issue.

Not only is Maverick County an important county in the runoff, but Kelly got 70 percent of the vote there in the '00 runoff.

It's pure speculation, but I'd assume that if BAR loses statewide by an amount less than or equal to the number of early votes cast in Maverick County (and, given her massive effort, I'm thinking positive that she'll win), the election would in fact be in doubt and that legal action could be taken. Again, pure specilation, but, if she lost by the margin mentioned above, I'm not sure a re-do (at least in Maverick County) wouldn't be in order.

Why didn't someone notice this on day one of EV?  Was everyone voting in Maverick Co. voting for Kelly?
